A different Delon Wright

Let’s talk about the newest Knick, Dalen Terry, and what he could bring to the table right now

Offensively, he’s mostly been used as a spacer and secondary handler. His three-point attempt rate sits at 41.6% (46th percentile),The efficiency hasn’t been great, but the context obviously matters. His shot quality has been rough (26.2 Shot Quality score, 9th percentile), and has a 54.3% true shooting (31st percentile) with a -1.9 CraftedOPM (13th percentile).

Defensively is where Terry starts to show some flashes as he grades out as a real positive on that end, posting a +0.8 CraftedDPM (73rd percentile). He’s active in passing lanes at 2.9 deflections per game (66th percentile), rebounds his position well, and holds up as a versatile matchup piece. Most of his assignments come against guards and wings, and he’s actually been strongest versus small forwards, where his length and anticipation show up. Even the rim deterrence numbers quietly pop for a wing (77th percentile), which basically speaks more to instincts and positioning than blocks.

Terry doesn’t need touches his creation load this year (24.4, 38th percentile) and creation score (2.5, 45th percentile) tell you he’s not here to do too much.

There are some offensive flashes worth noting too. He finishes well when he gets inside, shooting 66.7% in the paint and over 53% at the rim, and his shot diet is heavy rim and corner looks, which could improve his efficiency once he starts to figure out his spots.

Low-cost wing with size (6’6”, 7’1” wingspan), defensive versatility, shoutout @_the6thman

I really wanted things to work out w Yabu. Had a real chance to add an important wrinkle to this team but didn’t seize it

Thing the emergence of Diawara provided length, unexpectedly, and Yabu became expendable.

I don’t want to mess w chemistry right now and think small moves are best. This kind of move dds interesting depth if you imagine a finals w the larger guards of SA or OKC. Obviously minor role for Terry but more significant than what Yabu could be expected to contribute.

Wished it worked out here for Yabu but it was a bad fit. Should've just kept Precious!

This clears the way for Mo D to keep playing and developing!

No expectations of Terry and I honestly don't know much about him!

Mo should now get the extra 3 minutes a game that Yabu was playing so that other teams could know he still existed

This was my immediate thought - Delon Wright but Wright was more seasoned, able to handle and trustworthy.

Terry - more size, upside but not sure if he can help with any ball handling. Not much offense but maybe could be legit defender on wing - not sure we know enough about how good his D is or could be.

Ideally we could re-package him before Yabu deal complete and we get something else.

Teams like Knicks actually have less value for an expiring but want salary that they can trade.

One issue if we try to expand this trade to move Terry elsewhere --- we could end up adding picks we think we saved in this straight up Yabu/Terry deal.

I guess if we add picks we are getting something better.

In all seriousness though, this move helps simplify the Knicks path to adding a useable player. No Yabu tax on a trade. Now it’s Terrys expiring contract plus whatever level of assets.

Examples:
Terry plus a low level asset for Nick Richards
Terry plus a mid level asset (1 good 2nd rounder or multiple lower) for Alvarado
Terry plus a good pick (Washington picks) for Missi

Just a few possibility of how it could work. If the Knicks are simply focused on preserving cap space to stay under the second apron, Richards makes a lot of sense based on cost and providing center insurance.

He got to travel with the team to the Middle East and got a cut from the cup tournament. Plus, he will make more money either staying in the NBA or going to Europe. Nope, shouldn't feel sorry for him
