Thank you Philc1, for your advice and sharing your experience, greatly appreciated, cheers!
I’m visiting Australia this next summer. Where do you recommend I go in Sydney?
Hi Phil, congratulations on the upcoming trip to Australia and would absolutely be happy to pose some recommendations.
It largely gets down to your interests, there's something for everyone, natural beauty, history, nightlife, restaurants, culture & cities.
Broadly I'd recommend a bit of both if you have the time. Sydney is a beautiful city on the water, would recommend a boat cruise while you're there and possibly some whale watching if the southern whale migration season lines up. There's great fishing all over Sydney if that's your thing too.
There's many beautiful beaches in Sydney, Manly, Coogee & Bondi to name a few or if you have the time to travel a few hours South of Sydney there's stretches of unspoiled coast line, that even in the middle of summer, you'll have all to yourself. The Blue Mountains (Katoomba), about 2hrs by public transport west of Sydney are really beautiful too, if that may be of interest.
If you have time, like Nalod, would also recommend you get out of cities & go to Cairns, Darwin or Broome if you can, they're very far away but the far North of Australia is like another country. The South has pretty much been domesticated, the North is still a bit of a frontier, it's where the true Australia still lives on, the larrikinism, self deprecation and the real Aussie accents.
The natural beauty up there is untouched and very accessible, if you visit Cairns the Great Barrier Reef is fantastic, Darwin (Kakadu National Park) have some fascinating boat cruises along the wetlands (it's probably a bit like the Everglades) and Broome has probably the most beautiful beach I've ever been to, Cable Beach, and in the Australian winter (your summer) it's safe to swim - no crocodiles or stingers (dangerous jellyfish) The down side is, do not swim in any body of natural water up North no matter what time of year. Cable Beach in Broome, and only in the Australian winter, would be the only exception. The Great Barrier Reef is OK too with a tour group, crocodiles do not typically inhabit the reef nor do large sharks during the day light hours.
Oh and would certainly recommend a game of AFL/Australian Rules Football. It's a winter sport, you can see a game in Sydney but Melbourne and the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) is the home of Australian Rules Football, if you want to be amongst 100,000 die hard Aussie footy fans, this is the place to do it, the MCG is the Madison Square Garden of Australia. If this interests you let me know your dates and I can let you know the big games & teams that will be playing at the time.
In fact if you want more info on any of the above feel welcome to reach out, always happy to chat/help out.
