If the Democrats win both the house and senate in the 2026 midterms I think Trump will resign. He has a republican Congress right now and he had to give them a 6 week paid vacation just to prevent or delay any hearings or subpoenas on Epstein. Imagine what will happen if a Democrat is the speaker.
Outside of getting away with gerrymandering to pick up seats to maintain control. Since they can't do it by effectively governing with quality policy. GOP will get packed up in the midterms.
Even if they get the additional 5 seats in Texas with racial gerrymandering I still think the democrats take the House. They will need a full court nationwide press to get 42 additional gerrymandered seats in the house which is what they are trying to do.
It’s not just Epstein which is a crapshow that isn’t going away. The economic numbers look bad. The ICE Gestapo tactics arent popular a lot of Trump voters really thought he was going after only criminals and not the guys who cut their lawns and grill their burgers.
According to ballotpedia.org, 97% of congressional incumbents were reelected in 2024. Not sure if anyone watched the George Santos interview with Tucker Carlson a few weeks back, but Santos had a lot of interesting things to say about the powers of incumbency in the House. Sadly, gerrymandering has become so endemic that real change has become virtually impossible. Im actually surprised that Texas and California can make changes to make districts even more partisan. Roberts didnt do the country any favors un Rucho v. Common Cause when the SC ruled that gerrymandering was outside the purview of the federal govt.
Re: ICE, I dont know. As someone who has spent lots of time and money navigating byzantine immigration rules over the years, I honestly dont have too much sympathy for people who dont follow the rules. There was a recent story about a NZ women who went to Canada and was then redused reentry because she didnt do the proper paperwork to return to her home in the states. Reading the coverage on cnn, it seems she has no one to blame but herself.
I do have a lot of sympathy for Afghani refugees who came over during Biden's disasterous pullout. These refugees were almost all granted their status based on helping the US in Afghanistan. It would be a real betrayal to send them back there.
