This is about ownership that would let him go more than Harrison.
But does Kidd really want in NY? Sure he and JB are tight, and thats cool.
Rick? He can be let go and get his money. How does JB feel about that? Maybe its the for Daddy to give his son some space?
Don't matter that Kidd played for Knicks. He wormed out of BKN who took a chance on him for Milwaukee. What happend there and why was he fired?
Lets not glorify Jason Kidd. For sure a great PG/HOF and seems to be a good coach. He is also a dick. If players want to play for him Im cool with that but lets not go over board.
His agent Jeff Schwartz of EXCEL has a darn good portfolio of players including Mikal. Not sure that matters.
Talent aside, what does WWW and Leon think of him? Kidd have any bearing on Mikal extending.

Folks falling all over themselves anointing Johnny Bryant as best young coach in world but we can’t say Kidd is an excellent coach with 10 years head experience, recent finals visit as coach, nba champion as a player, hall of famer and one of top PG’s ever but Johnny Bryant is next Holtzman.

This is also about Kidd's shortcomings which is to be considered. 8 seasons as a head coach with a .514 winning % and one 50 win season. Nobody said he was a bad coach. Just not into the dressing him up as because he was a great player. We all know that does not always translate. Not a good look bailing on a team that just gave him an extension. If Dallas wants to make a change thats a different story.

Im ambivalent about Bryant and do agree often the young assistants are over hyped as the next great thing until they are forgotten into oblivion. Some are given time to grow from mistakes with a young roster. This is not that kind of situation.

Often young guys also get a vet to sit as head assistant. Who babysits Bryant might matter.
With a talented veteran core Knicks need not just the right tactical guy, but manage egos and personalities. Not saying Kidd is a bad coach at all. Fact is nobody on this list is a slam dunk until we get down the road and get results.

Leon might have his choice already as one currently employed as an assistant?

FWIW, Kidd was traded to MIL for 2nd round picks. Doc Rivers was traded to Clippers for a 1st round pick.

I feel Kidd has always done a good job with the teams he’s coached. And most importantly if the FO is enamored with him then I trust their judgement. Leon’s hires in FO - scouts, assistant GMs, advisors - have all been home runs.

They interviewed Kidd and 2020 and were blown away. So they see something there that we don’t have the ability to see as fans.

He loves Brunson and Brunson loves him. He’s a young coach and a vet at the same time. He lives in NY part of the year (Hamptons summers). And was part of the organization as a player before he moved on to coaching. And then there’s that Giannis guy…

I say bring in Bryant with a high level assistant who was a successful HC. Someone like Frank Vogels defensive success could compliment Bryant’s offensive strategies. Then bring back Mike Woodson because it makes too much sense. And of course you still have to have Rick Brunson. There’s the top half of the bench.

I think it will be Bud but Kidd really intrigues me.

I was intrigurped by Ime too but not sure how he fits w our star players

There are not a lot of candidates who can say “I’ve been there. I know what it takes to win a championship”

There are a lot of quality, innovative candidates

Tough decision but so was firing Thibs

That Kidd summers in the Hamptons or played here 10 years ago has no value in my book. His relationship with a a coach with our FO would be. His acumen as a leader is paramount. That he only lasted a season before grabbing the Bucks job was a bad look but that was 9 years ago. That he jumps ship in Dallas after being extended might not look good for him. If Dallas wants a new guy to grow with moving from a short window now they have a potential cornerstone player that might be different. One might guess given the circumstances Dallas could have another window opening if the pieces all fell in place. Kyrie, AD and Flagg perhaps the year after next could be the path. Kyrie has a team option this year at 43mil, at 33 year old and an injury that often requires a year to heal and sometimes a year to get back to where he was. This assumes no other complications or injuries. 43mil is a big nut for a small player at that age. Kyrie was great for them. But we talking about Kyrie who has those voices in his head. My point is Dallas could move AD and go for a reboot. I'd think teams looking to make a package for Giannis like the Rockets might find AD very gettable at the right price. Won't come cheap, but Dallas can pivot.

BTW, I should have put Sam Cassell on this list.

Feeling at home in New York does matter to me. We saw how awkward it was to have West Virginia D’Antoni or Midwest Hornacek or Montana Phil Jax here. Versus how comfortable Thibs was here. A NY coach really needs to understand the NY media market and the pressure that comes with it. And also understand the fanbase to a degree. It’s a unique aspect of coaching in NY that’s different than any other market.

Montana Phil? The guy that spent 10 years a a knick? Literally the greatest coach of all time? The guy both Kobe and MJ never won a chip before or after they were coached by him? The guy who succeeded in Chicago and forged MJ talent to the next level. The guy that killed it in Los Angeles and you think the fact he grew up on Montana him awkward? This guy as a rookie embraced NYC in the late 60's and thrived here. He came here for two reasons, a stupid amount of money and he really loved the city. His lack of success had nothing to do with his ability to read a subway map or beat the summer traffic to Southhampton, but inability to adapt his incredible success as a coach into a productive model as an executive.
Mike D'antoni failed because he was from West Virginia? The guy that played and coached in Europe and other you deem awkard because he was from there? You think he lacked the sophistication or intelligence to understand what he was signing up for? I thought his roster had more to do with anything then his lack of urban exposure as a kid.
Kidd is for sure comfortable in this market and media savvy. I expect any candidate understand not the pressure of media and fans (which exists about in any NBA city) but the window of win now with this current roster. Hornacek did not fold under the bright lights because they were bright. His roster was not strong.
This is a really silly defense of Kidd. This is not about his "comfort", I assume that. This is about his relationships, manner with mature players, stepping into to fix the issues while preserving the "Brotherhood" and positive culture that exists. Knicks faltered on basketball issues But still had a great deal of success on the court.

Again, Im not against Kidd. Also, the NY media market is not what it used to be. Don't get me wrong, Knicks are still a big deal but there are only two major papers that follow the team. The Athletic is a national service owned by the times. Not like these guys are hawking the coach in the airport during flight delays. No doubt Johnny Bryant will be hit hard but we have not seen him yet do it. He might be a media darling for all we know.

Phil was retired on his ranch in Montana and a big hesitancy to take the job was moving to New York. He was even contemplating running the team from afar. Mike D'Antoni never fit into this market personality wise. It's not for everyone. I think that's a fair take and not being from here is not the reason either guy failed and I would never say that. But it's important to fit in here, understand the market, and feel at home here if we're looking for a long term coach. The media pressure is going to be IMMENSE on this fire, considering how they are all lambasting the firing of Thibs right now. So yes, that all goes in Kidd's favor, but it's just a component and not the only or most important thing. You need to have a grip on what it is like to play here and succeed here and deal with the fans and media. If you are not simpatico to steal a Phil term, it will be a problem.

Remember when a guy called Mike Francesa and said Vince Lombardi should coach the Knicks? That was pretty good.

OK Nalod all fair points.

I will say that with a Bryant -- you could easily be getting Fred Hoiberg --- we just wouldn't know.

On Kidd front - I will say whenever I've watched Dallas either with Kyrie/Luka or without either/both I've always been impressed with the way they play from a share/space/defend perspective and playing bench. I would same the same for Taylor Jenkins - very impressed with style of play and use of roster. Was also very impressed with them when they went to Finals a few years back.

I think the relationships Kidd already has with the Brunson's and Giannis factor in -- not sure how deep he might go with others on the roster or members of Knicks front office.

I think biggest criticism of Kidd could be that he could get antsy and potentially flee for a better spot if things were to implode.

Good points and I keep coming back to watch Dallas play --- they are a tough team with or without Luka/Kyrie.

Also like that with Kidd they have gone for long defenders - Lively, Gafford, PJ, Jones Jr, Marshall and throw in AD (as a 1 off).

Agree - the Hampton's is a non event unless of course that means he's remained tight with Jimmy Dolan.

The jumping ship thing could be the concern (see Pat the Rat and even Van Gundy for as lauded as he is)

I also recall Phil talking about the wonders of the city and his love for it and the fans. Personally I could care less how much time he spend here providing he improved the product on the floor.
He was as desperate hire by Dolan for many reasons.
Don't recall Mike not fitting in. I recall his was adamant about his system and pushing back on media.
Larry Brown from Long Beach on the island. His media experience was also confrontational.
Lets be honest, unless the next coach wins a chip or flat out retires that ending will be awkward as well. Knicks have had a lot of coaches over the years. Whose ended well?

I know JVG was killed by fans for "quitting" but I respected it rather than go thru the motions as a burnt out dude. At least it was honest. Larry Browns firing was awful. Isiah wooed him with money and they clashed from the start. Total cluster phuch by both start to finish.

These days National Media can crush all markets too.

Don't get me wrong, I do think its important a coach have a manner that represents the team well. Thibs really was not much on the personality scale as a public figure. He was intelligent and guarded. For that matter Leon rarely goes public. I suspect Kidd or anyone will also keep it tight and on point.

Going to start calling him Johnny Hoiberg now until the shower of flowers stop or until he gets the job and I fall in love with him.

Van Gundy probably would have too much pride to come back as just asst. coach and I remember back in 90's being so disgusted with his offensive system I could scream. He did change a bit in Houston but still mostly throw it in the post to Patrick/Yao.

He would be great as a D coordinator but what coach wants JVG sitting / looking over their shoulder ready to step in at the first sign of trouble?
