OG offensive improvement: Hot streak or has he leveled up?

He had that strong streak early in the season (capped by his 40pt outing vs Denver)... then came down to earth for a long while. But then following Brunson's injury, he has been pouring it on again. Recently, he was quoted as saying he was working on his handle and keeping the ball low, and that's changed his game.

For years, OG has been compared to Kawhi. As history tells us, Kawhi came into the league as a somewhat raw athlete/defender (an undersized PF in college), and during his years with the Spurs he gradually unleashed his offensive game. His level of development in the NBA made him a bit of an outlier. made an unlikely big leap from high end role player to superstar. He tightened up his handle and developed an outside shot. Combined with an awesome motor, there you have a superstar. He made the leap in his 5th season.

OG is now in his 7th season. The perimeter shot has been there for a while, but critics have said he his handle has been holding him back, lacking star confidence in his drives, largely because of shakey handles.

For the second long stretch this season, he has turned it on again. My recollection was that early in the season, he was scoring a lot from ball movement and shot making. This recent stretch seems a little different in that he looks more like a key focal point, rather than just scoring in the flow of a motion offense. He has been playing at a star level lately.

So the question is... have OG unlocked an all-star level offensive game, or is this a mirage? We understand that with Brunson's return, his touches and scoring opportunities will decrease a bit, but from this point forward will he move and play like a top offensive threat when he does touch the ball?

Hot streak - he'll return to being a 3&D role player with Brunson's return
Leveled Up - the Offensive Juggernaut has been unlocked

Quite the improvement, stats jump out

After his most recent 30-piece over the Phoenix Suns, Anunoby now has six 30-point games this season after having just six in his career entering this year.

He now has a career-high 32 games of 20+ points, blowing away his prior high of 20.

His shooting has risen from the ashes. Since January 20, he’s shooting 44.2% from the corner and 41% above the break.

In all, since returning from injury in late February, he’s averaging 21.8 points and 5.0 rebounds on a great TS% of 60.9%.

Gotta be the legs...he didn't have his legs for much of Dec/Jan into his injury in Feb. He had a foot injury, but he was losing his balance/falling and looked a step slow after his 40 pt game in Denver for weeks. There was something there that was bothering him, otherwise this could have been a continued progression from his series of excellent games in November - check the game logs right till November 25th...was really doing well offensively and efficient and then it really falls off for a prolonged period. He came back and a week or so after started picking back up what we were seeing the beginning of in November.

Anyway my only point here is I think he was making this leap with his game and came into the season with a new mentality/progressed his skills. I still think with OG the risks are always physical/injury.

that's twice... I was reading something about OG and thought "its almost Giannis like" and the next comment was yours. Then I was reading this one and was thinking how explosive his legs are right now. His bounce, lateral movement, 2nd step.... he's just popping.

Seeing OG playing like this along with a healthy McBride and Mitch looking good for 20 minutes is really giving me feels about the postseason

I feel like this team just plays hot potato when it comes to taking over a game, or being featured, or whatever

I just think the more time that goes by, the matchup is going to dictate whether or not a specific player goes off or not
