A lot of politicians will fall back to right to carry arms. Ok if you want to carry a hand gun that is your choice however, why would you need to carry a semi or have body armor. Even hunting there is no reason to have that kind of fire power. Politicians mostly need to the votes and funding from the NRA so they would never cause conflict to disturb that cash flow or votes.

My father was military and gave me a gun (hunting rifle -- 22/410 over/under) for my 8th birthday. I was taught to shoot and clean the gun, but also how to store it safely, respect it and others, never point it at anyone even if unloaded (or even a toy gun). Above all he told me "don't carry a gun unless you are prepared to use it." That advice has kept me from ever getting a gun again or even carrying any kind of weapon (I live in Brooklyn ). Nut jobs walking around like they're f@%king Rambo -- something is bound to go wrong. And some sick kid can buy multiple assault rifles on his 18th birthday just like that...and so on....

Obviously it isn't only about guns. It's about a sick culture where priorities are imbalanced to a degree where negative acting out permeates. It can seem hopeless to address it. I think the best we can do is start at home, right?

you mean deflect responsibility from guns?

Fuck no. Thats the NRA answer.

Guns are tools of violence that allow the user to have a very loose emotional response to pulling the trigger. The make suicide incredibly easy. They make killing children easy. They make killing animals easy. They make killing people you are uncomfortable with easy. Nah man... lets start with the phucking guns. Maybe "home" will be better without firearms looming over every conversation.

They are a cancer to our culture and any attempt to protect them is antiquated, obsolete and unwelcome

But I am totally open to discussion.

The bolded comment you jumped on follows my saying "it isn't only about guns -- it's about a sick culture." I'm addressing what to do about that which feels overwhelming. I can only start in my own sphere. You know, principles like kindness, accountability, communication, respect, and so on.

I didnt mean to target you per say.. that was a unfair. Might have felt that way, but I will say you echoed something that is very much part of the problem, which is "what about..." or "lets look (anywhere but at guns)..."

Its literally against the law of the land for the CDC or government health body to say "guns are dangerous"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dickey_Amendment

Its just so phucked and phucked so deep to its core.

So while our good republican Briggs is sick of guns and folks are looking at home we will just carry on with more of this because its only getting to get worse.

Maybe in the stress we are not hearing each other clearly. I believe my posts have stated unequivocally is that accessibility to guns plus the types of weapons is despicable. I also suggest there are other factors. If we disagree on this than so be it, but I believe we as so many here share a grievous concern with this horrible phenomenon..

I can't get to Twitter right now to show it, but the 20 largest receivers of NRA money are all Republicans and Ted was the biggest by a country mile.

Cannot stand Ted Cruz, only guy whom former Prez Trunk talked Sh_*%#t putdown to Cruz Wife.
Thus Skank Ted Cruz is in Love with Trump as much as Guns. Very sad for USA

And just to be clear I hate guns but if someone wants to own one a hunting rifle is fine for game but I am referring about the ones that can mow down anything at a quick rate. There is no reason to have that kind of firearm.

All I hear is about teachers with guns and I feel that is not the answer. The next thing I hear all the time is that it is someone's constitution right to have a firearm, well IMO when that was in the constitution it was a different time and mindset. Not to mention the firearms were not semi auto weapons or worst, most of the time they were guns that didn't even work.

Mental health is bad everywhere in the world but the U.S. has the biggest problem because guns are used by the unwell.

I really don't understand why there is such resistance to lengthening/strengthening background checks, and I really struggle to grasp why you have to 21 to purchase booze but 18 to purchase assault weapons

You can do background checks all you want. But you cannot predict when a person might fly off the deep end. Mental illness can be cause by any societal stimulation. Guy wakes up on the wrong side of bed, break up with wife or girl friend, bullying you never know when someone may become a danger to self or society. Access to guns is the key as well. You never know when a kid gets access to from someone who may have passed a background check. Best would be eliminate guns. But eliminating gun opens up other issues especially when you have government corruption all over the place.

I would add there is a long term but still growing epidemic of drug and alcohol abuse very much adding to the facilitation of mental/emotional deterioration and crack ups. I’ve seen it up close. Shoot, just get on the subway where people are starting to shoot too.

Just make it harder to get guns. Look at other countries have in place and perhaps consider it.
Have registrations like Cars. You get arrested, DUI, domestic order, don't pay taxes, don't pay registration fees, etc, you lose the privilege.
On certain meds, nope.
And we can't do this because it violates what in fact?
Lets go further, got to buy insurance too. I have to with my car. I have to register my car. Drivers have to show proficiency they can see, they operate after illness, and register the cars and pay taxes.
Guns are burdan to society and gun owners should pay for it. Make the insurance company do the back ground check. Yes, you can't have a legal fire arm without insurance. We have to pay for roads don't we? Thru taxes on Petrol and registration fees.
And I have to provide proof of insurance. Same for Guns. If its that important, then do it. Guns are not free, they cost money.
Bans are one thing. Being responsible is another. Yes, we have to legislate that because it pretty obvious we have abused it.
NRA is corrupt and they spread that to our politicians.

Republicans seem to pander to its constituency and they want no part of "less guns". Party first creates a wider isle. At the end of the day would a voter like Briggs go Democratic? I gather there are more issues that might keep one right?
So why would GOP give up its gun positions? It risks losing voters. TO whom? Cuz someone gonna go pro gun and split the ticket. Thus, GOP puts party over principles.
With Lobby money flowing we don't get the best interests of its citizens provided.

It's not just background checks. There's been an overall lack of accountability. What happens to a person who's a known child diddler? They get red flagged and are prohibited from being around children. The Buffalo shooter showed several signs, but was still allowed to purchase firearms. Yes, there are going to be random acts of violence that can't be accounted for. But this country isn't even doing a good job of stopping people who clearly have issues from weaponizing.

fine. I concede to you. you win. that said, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't be vetting individuals properly

As a person who hates guns I'd argue that restricting gun ownership is just one of the steps this country has to take... most of us believe mental health, substance use, education likely play a part in school shootings/violence and all need more funding and resources for our communities. Also our country is so divided and polarized it forces each side to take a "we're right you're wrong" position.

I think instead of focusing solely on guns it may be more helpful to create a package plan that includes many of the known variables at play. It also may help Repubs loosen up a little and take a comprehensive package more critically since many/most have hitched their wagons to guns for years and years. Once you're locked into a defensive position it becomes increasingly more difficult to change paths, acknowledge the possibility that your thinking is stinking, etc... so a proposal that included more funding in several areas (eg mental health), along with more restrictions for gun ownership may offer an opportunity for unity that both sides can get behind.

It may go beyond lobbyists and donations. The right wingers have created an agenda of fear that revolves around “socialism ,” men in wigs using girls bathrooms, immigration, abortion, and those who would take our guns away. America loves it guns, cars and trucks, and beer. The gun thing is so locked in to how they sell the Fox News Fear to the great unwashed. It’s not a matter of any nuance or fine points on these issues - ask Josef Goebbels.

Maybe Cruz and his fellow bobos want to reenact the Wild West but, yeah, I’d guess it has more to do with where their money comes from and hanging on to power. Egregiously despicable in a world teeming with the despicable.

We should also arm Postal Workers with guns. Retail workers. Gas station workers. Waitresses. Yeah makes sense.

This will unfortunately never change. Unless we get rid of lobbyist and private sector political donations. Which the greedy politicians cannot live without. Unfortunately, it will be just tragedy after tragedy followed by mere grandstanding and then we reset the clock for the next nightmare.
The problem with laws and government is that they will always be under the control of greedy power hungry politicians. Not logical intelligent men looking for the best for mankind. Ones that can easily steer the dumb herd in the direction that best suits them.

Do think that is true but government was put in place to protect the general masses from the minority with dangerous ideas.

I agree. The dumb have been brainwashed to feel like their freedoms would be stripped if reasonable gun control measures were taken. The founding fathers would not have let the general public have military weapons. Especially the ones seen today. Gun advocates would be okay with someone driving an armed tank down their streets. Or a guy carrying a rocket launcher. It's up to the government to put in place laws that makes common sense. For me, that includes outlawing everything besides basic handguns. Doing a mandatory class and background check. And I do not mean the 2 hour social class that is currently required. You should also have to wait at least a few months prior to being able to purchase a gun while a full national background check is completed. There should also be automatic lengthy sentences for anyone committing a crime with a weapon. Of course, this is all to keep the right wings from revolting. I vote for NO guns for anyone but the military. Works in England.

general question...how important is the 2nd amendment to you?

like really...where do you rank it?

if you really care about the gun problem in the US then why would you ever vote for a republican. they wont do anything about it.

people can be upset, exaspersted, angry...whatever. none of that matters.

do you want gun acquisitions to be tougher? then dont vote republican.

ask yourselves where you rank it on what's most important to you and vote accordingly.

all the other sh t is just noise.

Ot sick of guns
