Generally speaking PGs are 4-5 year projects. The ideal situation is to trade for a PG who has already got a few years in.

Don't think like that.

Todd Fuller
Adonal Foyle
Jeff Foster
Mikael Pietrus
Andris Biedrins
Ike Diogu
Patrick O'Bryant
Marco Belinelli
Anthony Randolph

Then the Dubs drafted Steph Curry.

Even after that, Ekpe Udoh and Jacob Evans

You don't give up the draft. You do the best you can given the current time and place.

The bigger concern is something I've said since 2011 on these forums - Make the best overall "market based decision" possible. Based on that Obi Toppin was not a pick that was likely to help this team. If you make the best market based decision and fail ( Frank Ntilikina falls into this category), then sometimes that just happens. What you don't want to do is oppose market trends and fail. Because that's self inflicted chaos for no good reason at all.

Part of what drove the Warriors to Fuller and Foyle and Foster and O'Bryant was given the time and place, big men and good rim protection was very scarce. It's easy today to criticize Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan or Greg Oden over Kevin Durant, but those timelines had different circumstances.

You have to let the past go when you draft. What matters is learning from the past, not using it to drag you down.

Yes, this highlights a couple of core problems.

1) Leon Rose is a former agent, not a former analytics guy. For better or worse, Brock Aller needs full control of this front office. Look at Jeff Weaver in Detroit. One person can create massive change if you just pick a solid guy and leave him alone to do his job.

2) You don't hire a defensive minded / defensive first and always coach who loves to ride veterans when you have a team in the early stages of a rebuild. It's why I wanted Kenny Atkinson over any other coaching candidate before Thibs was hired. I will say Thibs did an outstanding job with the team last year and earned every bit of that COTY award.

At this pace and rate we'll have to get ping pong screwed to pick 9th or 8th because we're headed for a bottom 3-4 record...
