remember when you wanted to give Isaiah Thomas max money like 2 years ago?

Regardless of Rose, I immediately said that the trade is good even if we fail to bring in the high-profile free agents talked about (Durant, Irving...). If we hadn't made that trade (although we definitely had to make it because Porzingis didn't want to be here anymore), we would have had to give Kristaps a max and would be over the cap with him as the first option and Hardaway as the second...not exactly a good perspective, is it?

We didn't bring in top free agents (the ones we hoped for), but in the end it turned out more than good...

Given the moment, we over paid Hardaway for him to ascend. TO some extent he, like Randle had to learn to be a top 1st or second option. WE handed the keys to KP and him and we did get to .500 before over use of Timmy and his fracture,, and eventual breakage of KP did what it did. Randle was a similar stab and has he admitted last year he had to learn how to be top dog. Mook was there also doing well. Its not like Randle all of a sudden started working that much harder in the off season. He had to refine to reduce his turnovers and in time that 3pt also got better. Teh game has slowed for him and he has evolved as a player. Right age, right coach, right mindset and it all came together!!!
My main point is getting players BEFORE they break out. Most of us can’t see this. IN fact its the hardest part of being a GM/Scout. This applies to draft picks especially. So when I say Hardaway was a good idea, it was a good stab at rising talent. He did increase his game. Injury was a problem. When his fracture healed KP was down and he was the no. 1 option. He was never that kind of player.
JR smith was a good idea. Kid had allstar talent but his mind was never all there. Its why we got him as a free agent out of china post lock out. Knicks have a long list of good ideas that did not execute. They also have along list of moves we all saw as not being high percentage from the get go.

My point was that in case Porzingis stayed, we would have be locked over the cap with him and THJ as the first and second options. So that would be it and we would no longer have room for some significant reinforcements. Where would that take us? I would say not too far.

Today we have Randle and RJ as the first and second option and, very important, cap space plus 5 FRPs in 3 years. Also, we finally built a team identity. I would say that it is quite clear which situation is immeasurably better.

I agree and things worked out swimmingly!

Yes JROD, we all get that Phil Fucked over Melo and your forever damaged.
Parallel is ironic. When both DRose and Melo come to grips with reality they had very much changed the trajectory of there careers in their twilight.
Thunder Melo and Rocket Melo were different than BlazerMelo.

You guys always talking about staying away from injury prone players and he sits even when healthy.

I wouldn't give any player more than 3 yrs, not even Randle, Role players more like 2.

Gordon Haywood, CP, Dipo, Wall . KD are perfect examples of why 4 yr contracts are risky, a teams run in the NBA rarely go beyond 3 yrs anyway.

Then you get stuck with a player who had been relatively healthy prior to you signing them, then all of sudden the dude can't stay on the court.

Thunder Melo was starting and everything was going swimmingly until Andre Roberson got hurt bad and wasn't there to cover up Melo's D-ficiencies.
Rocket Melo was a bad Pringles payback wet dream that never really existed.
BlazerMelo comes off the bench plays starter minutes and is happy.

Rose is in full bloom sitting behind gimmick starter Elf and getting more minutes and playing all of crunch time.

Life always seems to work out well when your jumper is still falling.

What's your next move after every FA you want to sign gives you the big F U cause you don't want to extend them to 4-5 years?

Are you LITERALLY trying to bring back the era of the Knicks where they couldn't sign a guy even with cap space?
