This is Mitch's contract year, and frankly he was playing himself into around 18Million a year.
Knicks should be able to sign him to a significant discount after these injuries, which will allow the team to lock him up for another 3-4 years at a reasonable rate.

I am concerned Burke is playing himself into a very large pay increase and we do not have his Bird rights, so locking him up now is key...
If we could hold on to enough cap space for a max slot in 2022, we will be positioned to do great things in the next 5-6 years.

I am not sold on Bradley Beal... he has a decent players on that team and still they are horrible... pass!

Even if he stayed healthy, no way in hell a defensive center gets 18 mill, that's a mill less than RANDLE.

Keep in mind we were 10-5 without him, and 2 of the loses bullock and and payton were out.

When Kobe was the lone star in LA, his team was just as bad as Beal and the Wizards. Would you not sign him as FA because he couldn't carry a young talentless team on his back

Tell that Capella and Gortat.
Beal will be 28 by next season he has a player option for 22-23. So at earliest he is UFA after next season.
Naturally after the last game were 1248 ego nemesis Frank frustrated him on defense its not a good look.
But don’t worry, nobody here actually makes any decisions. By the time we can get our hands on him he is a 30 year old. Now, do you want to sign him for a 4-5 year deal then? we not talking about a 23 year old Kobe are we?
We had RJ and in two years he will be all of 22 and not yet hit his prime. lets just say I’m not rushing to judgement quite yet either way.

I feel atleast 4 centers in this draft would keep our ship heading in the right direction

(Fan of Robinson)

Not a fan of the price tag for what he does.

Not a good free throw shooter

Best thing he does is protect the rim and lobs.

Yes he can chase around a sf or sg in short bursts. But in these occasions is where he is likely to get hurt again.

Alters shot. That’s replaceable with a long arm guy

Rebounds.. a long arm guy can handle that

Protect rim.. guys in this draft can do that. Long arm guy again

So if we drafted another center he probably would just not be as Mobil on the perimeter and can’t catch runnng lobs at 11 ft in the air

But maybe the guy we draft actually bas a post move or two and can shoot free throws at 65 percent?

I know someone will pay him because similiar or better centers in the league got paid such and such.

But to me I see 8-13m player currently

Good chance the Knicks draft Isaiah Jackson from Kentucky. He’s a Mitch clone and I’m sure Payne had a hand in recruiting him and really likes him. He came on late for Kentucky after it was too late, but his upside is there and he’s probably a mid first round pick. He’s also a good free throw shooter and has some decent offensive upside as being much more than just a roll guy.

Just saw his highlights. He reminded me of Robinson with More offensive skill lol

Only complaint is he is probably only 6-9 and light at 205 LBS currently

If he makes 6-10 no shoes and gains muscle/weight might have something

Mitch (in his 2nd season) broke Wilt Chamberlain's FG pct record. How long did that record stand?

One of the best defensive bigs in the league as well. Not so easy to clone. Very much hope the FO does'nt feel that Mitch can be so easily replaced.

This is the exact reason I wanted to sign Drummond, Mitch has been unreliable.

Its a challenge to keep a lanky 7 footer healthy.

Really? Easily characterize two bone fractures as deal accidents. Doubt we are dealing with a bone density issue. Up until broken bones the guy barely missed a game. You are using the arguments that people use on big heavy bigs like Greg Oden. If anything, Mitch has a bear perfect build to stay healthy. He landed poorly... that’s not injury due to “breaking down” or poor conditioning. He just landed wrong.

I’m a believer in Mitch. He’ll be back.

You know I gonna spin wit it

He’s definitely not easy to clone. But as of right now the Noel has replaced him adequately. Not sure if it will last, but this front office seems more calculated in terms of how they disperse their resources and they may believe Noel at half the cost, a backup on a rookie contract and Gibson on the minimum is a better use of resources than giving Mitch a real contract that he will likely demand. Leon rose will want to maintain cap flexibility for the big fish, while paying Randle what he’s worth and keeping options open. Lonzo Ball might be an exception, but I just don’t see big contracts for all of these guys because rose probably has a couple guys in mind he’s going to wait out. The question is if he thinks Robinson can be kept under those circumstances.

I read all of this and see that we have a fundamentally different view of Mitchell. For me, he is a safe starter and a great one. A great defender and a prototype of a modern center. If he also had a three-pointer, he would be one of the most desirable centers in the league.

I certainly wouldn't say he's "injury prone". Yes, these two injuries don’t look nice in a short period of time, but these are classic fractures and it’s just a bad luck. If it was a knee, back or something like that, it would be a different matter. Also, Mitchell has not yet fully developed his potential, which he would surely succeed with Thibs.

And some here are already writing there are "several players in the draft who could replace him". Not to mention some people think that he is not worth more than 10 million per season ...

Either way, Mitchell will be RFA this summer or UFA next and I think some here will be surprised by the offers of other teams. As I’ve written before, I honestly don’t believe the FO will take the risk and let him be a UFA even though who knows, maybe this injury will change some plans as well.

Completely agree. In the end, while the injuries are concerning and create doubt, it may work in the Knick's favor as far as a new contract. Possibly a re-worked, declining contract would be favorable for both Mitch and the team. Get Mitch his payday early and later in the contract more flexibility for the Knicks. We will see.

When i stated he couldn't "stay on the court", it was a combination of his foul trouble the last 2 seasons, and injuries this season, I never said anything about injury prone. Based on his slow progression and maturity, mitch will probably come into his own, but it's likely to happen during his 3rd NBA contract.

Besides, You do not get the feeling Leon and Broc will over spend on anyone

Johnathan macri tweet breaks down Robinson’s extension possibilities very well

12m I’m comfortable with. But we still need to get a quality backup or two even when he is healthy.

Someone brought up Marcus Camby minutes restriction because of injury I forgot about in the late 90s.

Robinson might need this going forward. He is an expensive specialty lol

If we can get ball under 20 and Robinson under 13 and keep our picks and pick up a (long armed center who likes carbs) lol with one of them 4 draft picks.

A center 6-11+ Min 240-280Lbs Decent but not great mobility. Quick first jump. Min +3 wingspan. 1 or 2 go to moves dow low. Obviously this player would be a project for a few years (possible g league time)

I already see one or two interesting players this draft.

Not all fractures are the same and we don’t know what bone it is and if its vulnerable going forward, needs surgery, etc etc. He is likely done for the season so lots of time to heal, evaluate, and team to figure it out. Is the a Yao Ming type issue? Camby issue? And don’t forget both of those were a while ago.
Mitch is young still but if those 7foot upper jumping type guys lose some hops and not round out other parts of their game they won’t last long.
But, we just don’t know. With 4 picks (if we keep them) we should draft with an eye toward the future to trade or play!

I agree with you

All options are on the table. The next step is really whether or not they can/wish to secure ball.

Or go in another direction like draft a young pg.

The best case scenario he’s Marcus Camby who became more durable as his career went on

Rumor has it that the FO is leaning towards taking the option and then trying to negotiate an extension right after the start of the free agency this summer. This would eliminate the offers of other teams since Mitch would not be a free agent (neither RFA nor UFA), but the risk is of course if they do not agree, then next summer he would be UFA.

FO probably reckons Mitch will be more willing to accept a more team-friendly 4-year contract after another break due to injury. I must admit I would have nothing against such a development.

Missed 16 games his rookie season.
4 last year
A bunch this.........
Dudes that fly around will get hurt. In the big picture I’d like to receive value for him if he leaves but who wouldn’t.
Teams win and lose. He was a second round pick and his trade value has been unknown to us in the event that was on the table.
A foot fracture might have cost him big money. Berman says he worth bout 13mil a year now. This summer is his team option and if we don’t pick it up he is RESTRICTED, which then sets the market. That he is on his 6th agent tells me he has not been happy with his money. His video’s of shooting threes vs. midgets is promotion. Nothing wrong with wanting more. Question is what’s good for his career.
Camby had a pretty good level of skill offensively coming out of college. I love what Mitch does and he does it well. Year three he should be at Norlens level of some ability to make a short jumper. The notion of “Knicks keeping him down” that he promotes is perhaps a bit dramatic? I don’t know.
All teams have to sometimes make tough choices. Can’t just lock him up because we don’t see a future with another.
Camby had planter faciatius chronically. His fundamentals were always there and he refined them as he lost his ability to fly. Mitch does not have this base. No handle. Not even on a fast break. No post moves. Can’t face the basket and thus no passing opportunities. He blocks shots, rebounds, putbacks, and good defense. I like him. There is a reality though.

This is actually the biggest mystery to me in this whole story. Mitch was the second round pick and got a pretty standard contract accordingly. It is not at all disputed that his game surpassed the value of that contract, but he is neither the first nor the last.

I mean, I don’t understand what he could have been “dissatisfied” with his agents about so far. If someone on the side made him think that some kind of “raise” in the middle of a valid contract was realistic, then he doesn’t quite understand exactly how things work.

Is Mitchell Robinson still part of the team long term ?
