After Sliding to 8 I think it’s going to be Cole Anthony

Anyone who wouldn’t consider Cole at 8 is insane. People just want to say no thanks to the preseason #1 overall? If you’re not into him, fine, but it is a mistake you write him off... He had a pretty bad year, but no tournaments to redeem himself. And as a result, I think he’s fallen a lot farther in the rankings than is normal. But he still went for 24/11/4 against Duke. His TSP was 53.4. He’s one of the only PG that fits nicely into the “scoring PG“ bucket. He is not just an undersized SG

Completely agree with all of this. I’m not so concerned with his position either. We are asking RJ to be a playmaker so Cole not being a pure PG is fine. I like the versatility of them sharing the backcourt or sliding to the 2 and 3 and playing next to Ntilikina or another PG at times.

Agreed with both of you....Anthony's style of play projects really well to the way the game is played today. He's a scoring lead guard who can shoot and get to the paint and create for himself. He also shoots it well enough to play off the ball. Most teams play 4-out-1 in offensive sets or 5-out sets with the paint completely open. The spacing will be so much better and I think he will have a chance to get back into form.

There are a few other guys i like at 8 as well, Okoro, Vassell, Nesmith, Maxey (I would trade down for him) and Ramsey (See Maxey). But, for those opposed to taking Anthony, how many guards have a higher ceiling than him?

I don't disagree. I see the similarities with Dennis Smith Jr. A couple of things here; Cole Anthony has much better shooting mechanics and i don't think there's any argument he has better shooting upside than DSJ coming out of school. Also, i still don't see an issue drafting a player like DSJ at 8 because you're gambling on the upside. He didn't work out, some do and some don't. But when you're drafting at 8 there's no proven players. You're basically choosing between some low risk role players and a couple of leftover high risk/high reward star potential guys. This draft is no different in that regard. The only difference is there's no proven talent at the top this year. But at 8 this is a normal draft. There's some high potential guys with red flags (Cole Anthony/Maxey) and some low risk role player types (Vassell/Nesmith.) If someone unexpected slides that cool too, but gambling on Cole at 8 has to be a consideration given this being a weaker draft. I think at worst he's a bench scorer. At best he's an elite scoring combo guard who also competes defensively.

There are no guards with a higher ceiling. He's no sure thing but he checks all the boxes for a good gamble.

the other thing is, are we going to find another more prepared 19 year old? Cole has benefited from solid coaching his whole life. He's probably more league ready than most seniors.

He's an older freshman (older than Barrett) but obviously has had the attention on him for a long time. It really comes down to this. Preferring Cole or preferring another prospect is really about do you want the higher upside/high risk pick, or a safe role player at 8.

Cole is a better shooter and has more PG skill. I like Maxey, but he doesn't seem to have Cole upside.

Cole had far too many possessions where he attacked with two guys on him so I get some people saying 'no - pass'. I personally however can't fault him because no one around him had a clue of what they should be doing. I mean, there was open discussion about firing UNC living legend Roy Williams.

We want a high motor guy that can keep defenses honest. I think we agree that that was the mission statement at the end of the season... That's how he plays.

His numbers weren't good enough but if you look at his in conference play they were better - 20.5 / 5.2 / 4 on .432 / .368 / .795 shooting in 13 games and 11 starts. So not great but he didn't get a chance to turn it around... he was a 2019-20 All-ACC player. So not ideal but we aren't going to get any prospect that is 'ideal' at 8. But to be clear he is not dog**** either.

He plays the position we want, in the style that we want, with the pedigree we want... I am not going to get too choosy with the rest. He has an IMMEDIATE role on the team. This isn't like spritzing Kevin Knox with Miracle Grow and playing the violin for him.

Would you be satisfied if he turned out to be like Austin Rivers, another can't miss possibly #1 in the country sort of player. Rivers didn't have the season he wanted at Duke, fell in the draft to #10. He's been a pretty decent NBA player, but hasn't been able to lock down a regular starting gig anywhere. (valuable bench guy, though... 2 weeks ago he scored over 40pts vs Orlando)

His stock has definitely fallen since the start of the college season. He could fit with RJ (a creator big guard). Reflecting back on his HS career, he might be a better shooter than he showed at UNC and might benefit from someone passing him the rock.

Here's a comp between Anthony and his PG predecessor at UNC, Coby White (2019 draft, pick #7). This article says that Anthony was without peer in scoring in isolation (though that's part of his problem - apparently his teammates were not exceptional at moving the ball).

I think there's more hope for Maxey to become a good 3pt shooter (good FT %, was a good 3pt shooter until this season), think he's a better defender too. KP should be able to give us the inside scoop

Rivers is definitely a solid floor for Anthony. At worst he's that scoring combo guard off the bench that can fill it up here and there. At best i have compared him to Jamal Murray. That's a wide range of course, but it's a fair bet at #8 in a bad draft.

My alternative option i'm becoming comfortable with is Vassell. Watching film and i have underrated his athletic ability from the little i have seen him live. He offers probably more upside than i realized. Not as much upside as Cole, but probably a safer floor. He's likely a starter, whether he's a high end starter in the Khris Middleton range, or a lower end starter in the Danny Green range is the question.

Cole is essentially DSJr with better defense and a potentially better jumper. I would still rather Vassel, Okoro, or Neismith though.

I think we need to move on from drafting a pg this year.

We have cap space for 2 borderline all stars and 3 picks next year to get a pg

We should find out about frank dsj Lamar peters and Jared Harper

We also need to find out about Wooten and iggy in pre camps. Are there legit or good filler for a trade?

No way the Knicks take him at 8.

He came into the year as a potential number one pick. Got hurt in the middle of the season and came back to play hurt only to see the season cut short before he could get fully healthy. It’s been well documented he had a bad supporting cast as far as talent and shooting. Are you sure there’s enough evidence to not trust his talent ?

Let me ask it differently: what has he shown to warrant a top 10-15 pick? Poor teammates aside, whats he done? Sure didn’t make any of them better. Poor assist to TO. Poor shooting.

It's a good question. He did show elite penetration ability, the ability to push, create in the mid range area, defend and hit spot up threes. Is that enough to override his bad counting stats? Don't have a clear answer to that. I trust man Perrin to vet him. At least I'm confident he won't pick him because he beat Killian Hayes in a one on one.

Bodes well for waiting until the 27 to pick a PG. So many question marks among many of the PG's. Some forget how difficult it is to play the PG position and how long it takes to be able to do it at the NBA level. Anthony could be a surprise but is also a risk. Feel a kid like Hayes at least has size. But again, even some of the best PG's in the NCAA have failed to transition at the NBA level. Hopefully we don't take a chance with our 8 pick on a PG but rather wait and do it with the 27 or in the second round.
