A line up of Mitch, AD, Knox, RJ and Cp3 with Frank, Dot, Iggy and the 3 rookies this year and 4 more first rounders coming for 2021 and 2022, would bring a huge smile to all the knick fans!

There is just zero chance he is not a Laker next year. 2 seasons from now is another question

Its not like AD will not get a Max contract if he opts out, he can basically sign the exact contract he had with the lakers as a knick.

Strange things can happen in the bubble, the Lakers might implode and they fall short of a championship then AD would opt out. Or the Lakers would go win it all and AD will still opt out coz he feel just a second fiddle next to Lebron. He wants to prove to himself that he can contend being the uncontested best player in the knicks team.

How does this make sense in the real world?

It doesn't. It is certainly a low probability concept. If AD ever moves, its cause he has KawhiLeonard/PaulGeorge transaction lined up that makes him feel more comfortable than playing with a 35+ year old Lebron. Not gonna be easy to do better than Lebron as a teammate, LA as a franchise, or make the same dollars elsewhere.

I'd still be ok with [One of Ball/Hayes/Haliburton] - Barrett - Knox - Randle - Robinson for another year and focus on collecting assets again until 2021. Would love to go into FA in 2021 with these guys having learned how to play under Thibs. Until the young core really gets the timing of the game down and can consistently expand the floor with their shooting and contract the floor with their defense, I don't really understand why "stars" would want to play here.

You know I gonna spin wit it

this a ****ing fantastic signing. I love it. The biggest objection to Rose and Thibs getting hired was that it seemed like win-now-moves. Hiring Payne is clearly a move about building something, which is what we all want. Hiring Payne, the assistant HC from the biggest one-and-done-development-program in the NCAA is all about building something. I love this hiring

IDK if this is a PUFF PIECE, but it sure sounds good

This is a bittersweet day for us at Kentucky,” Calipari said. “Kenny has been an extremely important part of our success here. His relationship with our players is second to none. He coaches them and challenges them as hard as anyone, but they respect him, they listen to him and they learn from him because they know he cares. As a basketball coach and a teacher, he could run any program in the country. Simply, he’s as good as they get.

“I was disappointed that Kenny didn’t get that chance, but this is one of those opportunities Kenny had to look at, and I fully support his decision to join Tom Thibodeau’s staff. Kenny’s approach with his players, his knowledge of and his experience in the game, and his work ethic will serve him well on the professional level. I have high expectations for him in the NBA. For Julius Randle and Kevin Knox, it will be immediate, but as other players get to know and trust him, they’ll know he’s about one thing: their improvement and their success. I have no doubt that Kenny is going to be a great asset to coach Thibodeau’s staff.”

Guys, this was a joke.
Booker went to UK also....!!!! Also a joke. I like Book. I told you guys no player ever scored over 60 pts and was not in the HOF.
PHX existence is to be our feeder team! Same for Giannis and Bucks. Indy need to trade us Olidipo.
............Indy is a wasteland.
We get Victor for Knox, Randle and our pick at 6th this year.
Prediction number 2. We draft Bronny and Daddy comes at a discount. IN part because he Dad. Other because he be old then.

Who do you think will be the Associate HC at this point? Payne? Or Woodson maybe?

Was thinking the same thing. Ignorantly I had thought Woodson was still with Clippers but now has been out of the game two seasons now.
Not sure there is a story there or not. Reality is Thibs has a 5 year deal that takes him to age 68.
Given Thibs legendary intensity I wonder if being his assistant is also not an easy gig.

I have forgotten the names but I think Thibs targeting 2 guys that have been with him long term at Chicago and Minnesota, one of those guys will probably be his associate

I’m guessing Andy Greer and Ed Pinckney. Greer is his longtime guy and was once with the Knicks. I have a hard time believing Greer would get that job with Payne and Woodson being high profile hires, but I could be wrong.

The first person added to Thibs' coaching staff. Does this mean the birthday boy, Kevin knox is here to stay? Its turning out, DSJ is becoming the odd man out in this roster unless Thibs has already planned out a path for DSJ to elevate his game.

Im worried Thibs doesnt have enough of a voice in choosing his assistant coaches, i feel its important to have assistants that are truely on your side and not just share a common goal. Lack of cohesion within the coaching staff might tear the roster in half if factions develop.

I hope I'm wrong on this. Anyway, i think Kenny Payne bodes well for the knicks development staff!

These things are discussed ahead of Thib's hiring. He knew it, the Knicks wanted it. Knicks have 4 first round and 3 high 30's second round picks coming their way; I hope a good bunch of those guys spend a lot of time in the G-League.

I am guessing Thibs already knows who the top assistants are, has already reached out to them and just waiting for them to wrap up Bubble playoffs.

they appear very serious in building a real staff that can develop players. Thibs historically has made players better, but I'm not sure where he is in start from scratch development

Thibs doesnt lean on rookies too much. He likes a small rotation of vets, for the most part. Believe thats partly why they're bringing in the developmental talent. Have the team on 2 tracks. We have a lot of draft picks coming. Looks like there is a plan in place to improve the pipeline from draft pick to the pros. Wether Thibs sticks or not.

If Thibs had hired the assts, they probably wouldnt be as focused on development. He has a veteran asst in Woodson, and a rising coach in Payne. The mix of old and new I was hoping for.

This guy is the definition of a "GOOD FELLA"

I can not stop reading and listening to the praises this guy gets from players, media that covers the program, players that weren't even on kentucky, other coaches from other teams given him a shout, not one single negative.

I think this is the guy thats going to do what Fizdale was suppose to do as far as development and recruiting.

The best thing I've heard is that he is a firm believer in earning every minute your on the floor, super star to 12th man, from practice to game 7...

Update on assistant coaches:

https://knicksfilmschool.substack.com/p/safety-first-f92

I’m hearing that the Knicks are going beyond the level of due diligence, and will be taking the next month or two to conduct interviews across the league to fill out the assistant coaching staff. 10 or so interviews either will be or already are on the docket. As has been previously reported elsewhere, many of these new hires will focus exclusively on development.

I’m also hearing that a holdover or two from the previous staff is likely, as there’s some thought to not having the players walk in and see nothing but entirely new faces. My money is on Kaleb Canales coming back.

I still expect Mike Miller to remain, and remember: Miller was the head coach of the Westchester Knicks before coming up to the big club last year.

I like it! Looks like maybe none of Thibs previous assistants will be hired...

I'm still betting his guy Andy Greer joins him. He has been everywhere with him and was also with the Knicks way back. Assuming he left the Knicks on good terms of course and doesn't have a weird beef with Dolan or anything. So best guess is Woodson, Payne, Miller, Greer, and Canales with likely a couple other spots still to fill.
