and please understand ROY is not always a career maker either. Some years the kids are really young. NTilikina would be going into his freshman year at college.
Draft is not guarantee of anything. We have lots of history in the NBA of top picks busting. Its part of the process. Few enter the league as a sure thing and meet or exceed the hype.

Thing is KP and Willy made All Rookie 1st team in consecutive years. Empirical evidence suggests the Knicks current regime was able to assess talent. No guarantees of course but it's not true that they've not shown ability to assess talent. Hopefully Nitty will continue the trend. Tho at 19 he's a bit behind the rest of his class. Time will tell.

Behind? When the others were playing in high school and getting AAU accolades along with slithering visits by Coach Cal or validated by Coach K, Frank been playing proball with Men and succeeding. He has been tested at a higher level. What would NTilikina's hype be if he was going into his freshman year NOW?
Frank is not a bit behind, he is a year ahead. What we don't know is his upside.

Im not suggesting he is sure thing by any stretch.

As for Knicks drafting KP, we were fortunate that Philly and Lakers did not recognize his talents. I agree it was not a stretch that we pick him at the 4. Willy was a stroke of good opportunity for us!!!
Good scouting creates opportunities. Others scouted Willy? But they didn't pick him.

Now to suggest the knicks did a top notch job or a awful job selecting frank would be premature. We can only judge something on what has already transpired.

I'm not going to give the FO too much credit for KP, because he was the best left in his class when he was select(a straight no brainer), yes they did a solid job with willy, but I can say the same thing about landry fields, and tony douglas who had very solid rookie seasons..BUT WHAT HAPPEN TO THEM THE FOLLOWING SEASONS?

I'm pretty optimistic about franks potential, I just have little faith in the development process.

I think Smith would have been called the steal of the draft no matter who took him. But it would have been interesting. Is he considered the nextSteve Francis if the Knicks take him?

Smith would have been a great pick for knicks. It demonstrates a bit of restrain for us to have drafted as we did. Ntilikina build is at just turned 19 is compelling. The kid is not a Dante Exum/Dennis Schroeder type. he is going to be thicker. Fans hopefully will be patient with him.

Knicks have not done well as of late with players who have character concerns and injury issues on their scouting report. We just don't seem to hold the environment to handle that. Dallas is perfect for Smith. They have quality vets in Dirk, Matthews, Barnes. They have a HOF Coach. And Dallas isn't NY. He can also get cool with Steph Curry through Seth.

Frank is known for work ethic, only cares about basketball and nothing else, perfect teammate, professional attitude, oversized for the position. Exactly what NY needs at this moment as they try to build their foundation.
