Perry has only been with the Kings for a few months, but helped oversee what many consider to be a tremendous offseason, with the Kings bringing in four rookies and veterans like George Hill, Zach Randolph and Vince Carter. Perry was often credited in reports for bringing some stability and professionalism to the front office and showing Sacramento in a more positive light to both prospective free agents and draftees.

Losing Perry is unequivocally not a good thing for the Kings, but I am not going to fault them for not standing in his way. Per multiple reporters, the Knicks gig was Perry’s dream job, and he’ll likely get a decent pay raise to boot. Per Sam Amick, the Kings will seek financial compensation from the Knicks.

Should the Kings have done more to keep Perry or entice him to stay? Perhaps, but blocking him from leaving would not have been a good look for the organization, as former Kings staffer Devin Blankenship pointed out on Twitter:

If you block someone from getting a promotion with another team, you'll never be able to hire top talent again. Risk of hiring good people.

More importantly it should be noted that while Perry did a wonderful job in Sacramento by all accounts, a front office is far more than one person, and Perry should not be the only one getting credit for Sacramento’s offseason. That being said, the Kings should be looking for a replacement for Perry as soon as possible, having seen what someone of his caliber can do for a team’s reputation up close. I think they understood the need for that when they brought him in the first place.

This news isn’t great, but it’s not the end of the world either. The Kings are in a solid position going forward, and hopefully they can find a quality replacement for Perry sooner rather than later.

According to this article Perry was the second highest executive in the Kings organization answering only to Vlade. The Knick position has been called a promotion.

Not sold on him. His first decision to keep Melo is a terrible one if he sticks with it. He'll most likely be a Dolan crony.

I happen to agree with you. This is a bad deal if Melo stays disastrous actually.

Hopefully it's just a negotiating strategy- if Houston knows we have to get rid of Melo, are they really going to bend over backwards to accomodate us? Worth a try to see if it makes them up their game.

I don't mind the hire.
It's someone fresh with a fresh perspective.

The Melo talk is strategy.
It seems the situation has flipped according to latest Melo trade saga article by Woj.
Knicks open to keeping him, Melo wants to move on.

To me this gets Knicks more in trade. Now they look as a team happy to keep him, not desperate. We may get more out of the trade i the longrun.

Never understood why they always say cash considerations. Do you get a choice of bitcoin, Japanese yen, British pound or stacks of 10s and 20s.

Anyway 2nd round pick is likely to be in the 50s so no big deal.

It shows a commitment to Perry and to the search for the right guy. It would have been easy and probably wrong to just promote Alan Houston.

The Melo pause is them just re-setting their leverage. The vision of the team is still young and long with NO BALLHOGS like Melo, or Rose for that matter.

His first decision was the put the breaks on trading his 2nd most valuable asset until he can at least get his chair warm and provide some input on any decision.
