That was just a rumor so you can't really hold him responsible for it, right?
Phil did want Rubio and that seems to have been met with acclaim from many. He also drafted KP while everyone was booing, stole Willy in the second round and drafted us Baby Giannis just last week. We have all of our draft picks again too. Baby Giannis, remember, was just the 2nd draft pick that Phil has inherited in all of his time here. He's had literally nothing to work with except for retreads.
Yes he called out Melo and I give him credit for that too.

Who do we have running the show now? Dolan and friends?

Our best player needs to go and our 2nd best player has a growing attitude problem and had offenses that needed to be called out.

Melo to some degree.

We brought in Phil to reign in Dolan and CAA influence.

Melo is CAA emissary on the Knicks. CAA is the power that controls on the Knicks now.

Most fans only see the faces on the courts. The Melo's, the coaches. The next level fans know the GM's and owners. Beyond that level, the influence people don't know or understand is CAA.

CAA hates Phil. They act through Melo. Not just Melo but Lebron too.

Remember when Lebron called out Phil in public this past season, tried his best to embarrass Phil and Melo did no defense for his organization guy?

This makes sense as a CAA order to both Lebron and Melo to undermine a non CAA guy.

All these reports about Phil not getting along with people around the league? That's CAA blackballing him because he dares ask their client Melo in public to play defense.

We brought Phil in to control CAA influence and they overwhelmed him.

It should have been done before Phil got his extension. He got paid and then went to the owner about buying out Melo. I don't think any part of a buyout came up until Phil got his 24 mil.

This is an important point. Here's how I think it went down.

Phil was subject to Melo's passive aggressive mind games the whole season but he was always still intent on fixing the Knicks. He saw that it was hard to talk to him first. The subtle shots in the media didn't work. He probably looked into moving Melo and couldn't really get Dolan's support. So his next plan- Put Dolan in a position where he can't say no to Phil's plans. I think Phil signing the extension was Phil's way of now telling Dolan "you better really let me have my autonomy now because you just signed me to an extension, you idiot". I mean, who is going to fire a President they just extended 2 years, let alone the richest President salary in the NBA? Let alone one that just drafted an 18 year old rookie that fits his system. But Dolan did it anyway.

As I posted before, I think CAA influence is an unknown factor people aren't seeing. I could see someone from their organization relaying in so many words- "You ruined our valuable client Melo with those clumsy statements, we're not letting any of our stars near you again" to spite Phil and that scaring Dolan a lot. Dolan cares about the bottom line and his biggest fear is stars blackballing his team for good and then he panicked. I think CAA might of helped push stories that Phil ruined Melo and his value, that Phil is a racist, that no stars will think to sign with him.

You think that's happening here?
