Phil Jackson had many factors working against him with the Dolan/MSG group.
One, the media hated him. For Dolan this was actually a positive because the heat went off him for a few years. All heat on Phil.
Second, the team's results were not good. In NY there is never a re-building culture. Now add unknown European/international talent? Even less. Our best 3 assets are Porzingis, Ntilikina and Hernangomez. Phil has done fantastic with that group, but who really has the patience to see those players develop? I don't think Dolan and MSG expected it to take this long.
Third, Phil has an on going issue with Kristaps and Melo, the team's top 2 stars.
Just came to a point, where Phil's good (drafting, developing young international talent, taking heat off Dolan in the press) didn't outweigh the huge negative that came with him. Phil really didn't hurt this franchise longterm. He helped it. He was better than anyone we've had in the Dolan era (not saying much). He didn't make any stupid enough trade or move that set this franchise back years. As of today we have 3 players who are probably worth as much as any young 3 in the league (combined). Porzingis can net you 2 lottery picks and a starter. Ntilikina is a lottery pick. Willy Gomez is an all first team rookie, who I think could get you a late lottery pick as well. Had Phil not had to deal with Melo on the roster or the fact that he had 2 first round picks traded away that first year in 2014, would have been an even better situation right now.
I'm very appreciative of Phil's work with the developing of young players, bringing in international talent and incorporating a drafting structure and consistency. However he also messed up in free agency, made some pretty bad or questionable trades. Too much conflict with star players and media.
I just hope the Knicks learned from the good Phil did and bring someone who will add to that, while upgrading the negative aspects of Phil Jackson (trades, free agency). We don't want someone who will come in and trade one of KP/Willy/Ntilikina. We don't want someone who wants to trade the 2018 or any future first round pick. We want a guy who wants to develop the young lottery level talent we have, and also bring in more good active 2-way players. I really thought Phil did a good job in this draft to get two way players.
I am very concerned that this team wants to sign Jeff Teague or Kyle Lowry or Derick Rose. That is not what we need. We need to give Ntilikina and Baker more run. We need to aim for a top 5 lottery pick next year. No one's getting close to Cleveland or Boston this coming season. Adding a declining star vet on a huge deal is not the way to go. I was quite confident Phil was heading in that direction. Now I'm concerned we'll try to get into the playoffs around Melo/KP next year. Which is typical Dolan move. Skip the re-build, go for the quick fix. Sell of longterm assets for a quick fix.
