Melos' value is at an all-time low now. What team is going to want him for this season, after the comments Phil Jackson made?.... and that's assuming he waves the NTC, which he most certainly will not, nor should he.
What do phils comments have to do with melo's value?
Everyone around the league and in the media likes to run with the narrative that phil is a senile old fool with no idea what he's talking about. So why should they care what Phil thinks of Carmelo? If
phil is really as clueless as they believe they should take phils criticism as proof that Melo is a great player...
Praise in public, criticize in private, would have been a better way to go.
How do you know phil has not tried that already? I'd wager he had spoken to melo about these very same things in private, but perhaps those conversations did not turn out to be as fruitful as phil had expected. As a result, he went to the media in the hope that by publicly criticizing melo he could either embarrass him enough to inspire a change or make him uncomfortable enough that melo would waive the NTC. Unfortunately, that plan has seemingly backfired on both fronts.
I know because Melo said so repeatedly in interviews. They kept asking him if Phil had ever said anything in private about his game before Phil said it in public and he said "No" and that he wished he had. Phil said that Melo wanted a line of communication with him, wanted to keep in regular contact, that it was important to him. Dont believe the interest was mutual.
I dont believe he is lying, he looked genuinely surprised that Phil put their business out there like that. No other exec talks that way about their star player, at least not in public. Would have been much better off keeping it in house like every other exec. Especially those with winning records.
You don't think in phil's 4 years here he's ever sat down with melo to talk about his game? That's almost impossible for me to believe. I remember when phil first came here he talked all the time about how he was going to turn melo into Kobe or Jordan, so one would have to think during that time period he was discussing with melo the ways he thought melo could improve his game.
I think what Melo was talking about in his interviews is that he wished phil would have sat down with him again before going to the media. Maybe phil never explicitly called Carmelo a ballstopper in his talks with him, but I don't think the things he said to the media just came out of the blue.
Phil has kept his distance for most of the time he was here, he said at first it was a choice, but then it became clear to him that it was a mistake. They may have talked about the overall state of the team, but not Melo's individual game.
Phil has tweeted stuff about players, teams, all over the league, might have seen it as business as usual. Phil said it was a mistake to be tweeting and said he wouldnt do it any more (as an exec anyway) so thats one less bit of drama to deal with next season.
When Melo played like Dad Melo and averaged career high in ast with Calderon, Affalo, Williams, KP & Lopez. You dont believe that Phil had any influence over that? That we were 20-20 half way into the season with that lineup. With Melo playing team ball.
Considering the fact that Phil has by his own admission kept his distance, I would credit Phil's reputation as coach and champion for inspiring Melo to up his game, but not from direct involvement.
Inspiring people to improve themselves is still a good thing. What I would really like to see this season is DadMelo (if he stays) and GrandpaPhil. Make the players feel like Phil is available to talk to them, ask him questions about his career, rebuild his rep with players around the league. Make them feel like he has their backs.
Ive seen quite a few interviews where players joining the team or were hoping to get drafted said they would love to be able to talk to Phil regularly, have him around. He needs to exploit that quality to attract more talent. Dont believe he has made the best use of his legendary rep with the Knicks.
