Melo is in a contract year.
He is not going to tank if he remains a Knick.
He will probably play better than he has the last few years, at least effort wise.
He wants to go into FA looking like a strong asset, so he can get MAX or big contract offers in free agency.
I think we should try and trade him for a young wing or a top 10 draft pick, but if we can not, then we should keep him and let him walk at season's end or try again for a trade at deadline.
Move KP to 5 for this year bring Willy off the bench. Move O'Quinn via trade for two second rounders or a late 1st.
Maybe even try to be a playoff team. Probably miss out, but when chemistry was good and defense better 2 years ago we were in the playoffs until injuries hit. 22-22 I believe at one point and that was with rookie KP giving us 14/7 a night. KP may be able to give us 22/8 next year and more consistency. Monk or our lottery pick may be able to start and give us a spark.
If we keep Melo because trade value sucks
Draft Monk, maybe?
Sign PJ Tucker in free agency.
Re-sign Holiday
Porzingis/Hernangomez....Noah
Melo/Thomas..............second round pick or veteran FA on mininum contract?
Tucker/Holiday...........Kuzminskas
Baker/Lee................Sasha?
Monk/Randle..............second round pick or veteran FA for minimum contract?
That's probably a 35-40 win team, depending on where Porzingis, Willy (as a 6th man), and Monk are next year as players. We may even be able to sneak into the playoffs if KP performs like all-star for the season, instead of 4 out of 6 months, Start Baker at 2 (1 on offense) and Monk at 1 (2 on offense). Running the Triangle don't need a typical point guard. Tucker will improve D. Baker is a tenacious defender. KP at 5 with Melo at 4 is quicker and better on D than when they play 4/3 together. You probably improve a little bit on defense this way without losing offense firepower (better spacing as well on O). Bench is stronger with TWO go to scorers like Willy and CLee. You can bring two starting level playrs in CLee and Willy off the bench and they can get the 2nd unit points and good shot creation.
I'm not looking at Melo as a must trade. He and Phil can sit down before the season and talk it out. Phil did this with many of his players only for them to step up and win a championship even down the road. Not that it will happen here, but I don't see why if KP becomes more consistent, stronger and healthy and we draft well with either Monk (or someone like that) why we can't be a competitive lower playoff level team with 2 all-stars like KP/Melo. This team's talent is not the best in the league, but in the East we're easily talent wise a top 6-7 team with some improved role players, KP growing ito a man, team cohesion etc.
