I agree with everything you said. But what if he's 34 or 35 and on a max contract and he's an 8 PPG bench player? The Raptors would probably be buying a couple of good seasons and sacrificing long-term wins (unless they plan to trade him shortly after signing him). |

if it's a 4 year deal, i would expect 2 very solid years, 1 drop off year and then 1 bad year. it is what it is. but it does give you a true containment - you will spend those 3-4 years building a good a team as you can without committing longer term deals to vets. you'll give deals to your rookie deal extensions but you give it a go for the next 3-4 seasons.
