Look, if Melo gets the Triangle religion and stays, fine. But the idea that his trade value will increase after yet another year is an exercise in magical thinking. I mean, who the hell cares about Melo? Is somebody going to scout him at his age?
Right now he has some friends left in the league who can lobby for him - say CP3 in LA. By next year CP3 will need somebody to lobby for him. The shelf life of athletes is short. This is why Phil advised Melo to hit the road while he still can.
Chris Paul like the Melo of guards. Never even been to the conf. finals!!! Do Clipper fans debate him? Does he get a max contract? How does that age? $200 million contract over 5 years. I like the guy, hell of a player but Clippers kind of pulled a play from out book by trading away picks, trying to win now, and have two players that are due big money and rebuilding is difficult by moving picks.
Kind of sucks when your max starting center can't hit a free throw and his name is not Shaq.
Maxing CP3 and Blake is about as narrow minded as one can get, The last two yrs of that contract will be brutal, he'll have about as much as Kidd had in his tank when he played for the knicks, and making 32 million..You dont sign 4 yr contracts to anyone 32 and over.
It is crazy that CP3 never gets heat for consistent playoff failures, but IMO, doc rivers and woods on are not good coaches, when it comes down to the playoffs, the never make adjustment. We already know that about woodson, but doc was horrible this yr, trying to run the same game plan despite the jazz countering it pretty effectively..
Paul doesn't receive much blame because he actually puts up great numbers most of the time. He has had some serious meltdowns in the playoffs too but for the most part he is not really at fault.
Also, because of Paul's shooting ability and defensive skills to guard both guard positions despite his size I think he will last a long time like Nash and Stockton did. Billups is another example of an effective over 30 guard but the Achilles tear put an end to probably 3 or 4 more years of quality play.
I really would hope someone would do an article on the history of PGs and their shelf-life in the NBA. Do elite PGs last longer than elite wings and bigs?
