Hayward has clearly better options. Hill, sadly, might end up a Knick in a massive overpay.
The Warriors got some nice walk years out of Carl Landry and Jarrett Jack a couple of years before they won a championship. There was a A LOT of pressure for them to resign both players, who were productive that year for them. Despite criticism when the GSW let the walk, it was the right decision. Long term, it was a push year for both, in good situations, specific to that roster. Neither player did very much after that season.
Hill is not a difference making player, not for the contract it would take to sign him. He's in a good situation in Utah, on a specific team, with specific needs that he fills for them. He can defend his own weight at least, but before this year, he was in steady decline and was on his way to shading just a bit under league average.
If the Knicks massively overpay, they can get him. And that back end Year 3 and 4 will look right horrible. I'd argue he wouldn't be as effective on this roster compared to the current Jazz ( fit matters)
Why are Bill Belichick and Billy Beane so successful? They exploit and maximize a young players cost controlled years.
Grabbing a guy on his way up is value. Paying a guy for past performance is a bad way to chase ghosts and ruin your team.
Remember when the Yanks signed Carl Pavano. Signing Hill to a max deal is like the Knicks getting their own version of Carl Pavano.
