I'd need 3 from that pick. Those dudes only make sense if they are playing a very specific role on a very specific team.

When the league zigs, we should zag. Most teams will have cap space next year, so the traditional ways of getting value for it (signing a player or acquiring a short term, unsavory deal with an asset) will not yield much of a return. If we can get a return for Rose, I say we take it. We've already seen that cap space alone wasn't good enough to acquire Derrick Rose-level value last year when teams had an abundance of it.

not sure I agree about clevland. If melo is a 4 they don't need love, if he's a 3 then what's he doing playing behind Lebron?

I think they'd bring him off the bench to be LeBron and Love's sub. If it were feasible, I now think they'd be able to go toe-to-toe with the Warriors.

Who said anything about taking back bad contracts? If we could get expiring contracts and anything (even a 2nd round pick), it would be worth it. Otherwise, we let him expire.

+1. I think we could get at least one bummy 2nd rounder from a team like the Kings for Rose. But if I have to take back Garrett Temple's long term deal and Ben McClemore, so be it.

These are each guys who can play multiple positions. I doubt it would be a problem.

Agreed. The only thing that could get in the way of it are egos. But Melo's long-standing relationship with LeBron, Iman, JR and to a lesser extent Kyrie (via Team USA play) gives it some hope of succeeding. It's not like stars haven't come off the bench for the betterment of their team before (see Manu Ginobili).

Obviously if they got other expiring and a pick that would be great. My scenario was more realistic. Bonn, I can't run through every team but I'don't imagine there isn't even an option in the league that is even feasible for what you wanna do. Maybe there is 1 that is mathematically possible before even considering things like fit etc.

When I said take contracts back, in a trade for a pick that is the only way to get it done based on any trade under the current CBA that I can recall.

Don't forget that when he was talking to Dolan about taking the job in December 2013, the Knicks had an offer on the table for Kyle Lowry that was Shumpert and a 2018 1st round pick. Phil told Dolan not to do the trade because he liked Shump a lot. Then he gives away Shump for nothing in January 2015, like 13 months later. It'd complete the circle if he traded Carmelo Anthony to get Shump two years later. If we got Lowry we wouldn't have got KP and we'd owe them another first rounder.

Shump and Jr were traded because he opted to tear down the team to get a high pick, and it worked - we got KP. Shump and Jr had no value, there was a risk of injury for one or both of them. They still have no value, cavs can't give them away. They gave the cavs what they needed but what other team would they have worked on? Plus we got Lance as part of that deal, and last year that was good value

We trade Melo to Boston for all their expiring contracts (Amir, Jerebko, olynyk, young) plus their 2018 lowest first round pick, 2019 lowest first round pick and their 2017 second rounder from Minny

We then send Noah to the Spurs for Gasol, plus maybe one of the picks from Boston

This way we get first rounders for Melo plus erase the Noah mistake, plus get boatloads of cap space this offseason. Gasol becomes a great mentor to KP for one year.

The celtics get melo to compete for the chip right away while keeping the high first rounders from the nets

The Spurs get an defensive stalwart at center (i know, i know ☺) to strengthen themselves this year in place of the injured gasol plus a sweetener in form of a pick.
