exactly! been saying this for years ... one of the best catch and shoot players in the league.

I'd be interested in his percentage when he takes multiple dribbles to create 3 point shots. The video showed them going in but I'm going to guess his percentage is a lot lower.

much much lower ... need to find them but I remember that once he takes one dribble the numbers tank

so here is what phil is thinking ....

If he's making 3s and making it look easy who cares how far he gets off the ground. He has great rhythm on his jumpshot. If he's in a set position he's money. He's good at making bad shots too... he's a bad man

it is actually better that he is jumping less as is less reliant on his legs as he ages.

I'd rather he be a 6'8 Ray Allen at this point in his career. Don't handle the rock at all, just go around a screen or 2, 1 or 2 dribble max pull up, definitely catch and shoot, and camp in the corner ready for the kickout 3 player.

That would be ideal for the Knicks, to properly squeeze the remaining last 3 years of Melo's albatross contract.

It was and still is. Just because he takes only a quarter of the cap now and not over a third of the cap, doesn't mean you'll get a ROI on the remaining $80 million on his contract. Just means his bad contract is on sale now.

That's questionable. Would you have paid $23 mil per for someone else who was 32, had 13 years of wear and tear, and a .130 WS48? Would you sign them at that price for years 14 to 16 of their career? Or would you get younger players at better value to build with KP?

Ah...but wait. Wasn't Allen 6'5, 40 pounds lighter and..oh yeah....a shooting guard?

Well, I wanted to trade Melo when his value was at its highest (back when he was 3rd in MVP voting).

hornacek wants him to sprint to get open as rose/jennings push the ball. i'll believe it when i see it. he's never been fast and has conditioning/weight issues. meanwhile, i want hornacek to be sure that melo continues to be the playmaker i saw for 25 games last season, but this time i want to see that for 70 games.
knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

Melo was player of the month two consecutive years in April prior to his injury. The year before his injury he played the 4th most minutes in the nba and I believe averaged the most minutes played per game. Conditioning hasn't been an issue for him as a knick.

What does size have to do with being a catch and shoot scoring specialist? You totally missed the point.

Yeah Melo should be ready to run and get to the 3pt line. He's not gonna be expected to beat everyone down the floor all game. We have faster players for that. I'm not worried about Melo to be honest. Dude is a baller and the better his teammates are he can raise his level to match. That's why he balls out in Olympic team play.

because ray allen runs around the court like a gazelle forcing players to chase him through picks. Thats how he got open. Melo can't do that. Allen was not really a guy who ever just stayed still and waited for the ball.

melo is still a pretty dynamic scorer. He isn't Steve Novak and Pierce did call him the toughest cover in the nba. He maybe able to sit back and he Olympic Melo with this team because he has teammates that are more talented.

Based on this off-season, some other teams also added albatross contracts. Even after this off-season, how many players with .130 win shares and other advanced stats like his would give $23 mil per to? Then throw in that we're talking about paying him for his early to mid 30s.

He'll be making $27 million in age 35 at the tail end of his career, but no where close to producing at a decent rate.

If that's not the definition of Albatross, then I don't know what is.
