Because he left so much loot on the table last year chasing a ring he had to double down again this year since he rolled craps with the Spurs. If he gets a ring but only plays a few minutes a game and barely in the playoffs (a la Mitch Richmond) can you really be that proud of a ring? Especially since you had to chase after it?

West wouldn't get signed to one contender after another if they didnt believe he could contribute. Bench players have an important role in winning championships. If West played his role in winning a ring, then absolutely he should be proud. More proud than looking for the biggest payday.

I don't know. It's not like he has always been a scrub in the NBA. West is a former all-star. Do people really consider Mitch Richmond as an NBA champion because he sat on the bench for one of the Laker's titles? If West is a regular contributor and he wins a ring, fine. But if he's not a major contributor and he gets a ring for sitting on the right bench in the right season. I don't know. I guess it'll mean a lot to him. I will most likely forget he was on the team.

As a person who is competitive, I have a hard time understanding the mentality of the modern NBA athlete. It's crazy to me that people want to be the 12th man to "win" a championship or take a lesser role when they are one of the top players in the league. Crazy times.

You hit the nail on the head. It means a lot to him. More than money. West gets to maybe be part of something that no one can take away. Something he can tell his kids and grandkids, he was part of, played a role in. Got to play with some future HOFers in their primes.

Since he sacrificed about $12 million last year and who knows how many million this year, I guess that proves how much it means to him.

Kind of like someone stalking celebrities and hoping they'll take a selfie with them which is then put out on social media.

West taking less to play with SA in an attempt to help an aging team get out of the WC seemed to be noble... Taking less to be part of a team which just landed KD, is just sad, and comes across as a bit obsessive and desperate.

EnySpree: Can we agree to agree not to mention Phil Jackson and triangle for the rest of our lives?

The fifth year on the contract isn't enough. The original team should be able to offer 50% more money per year or some ridiculous number or things will never change.

I dont like it, takes the fun out of the off-season player movement speculation.

A better way is automatic indexation of all existing player salaries to the cap increase. That way teams would be hard pressed to have 3 max players, of whom one or two may be getting the significantly lower "old cap" max. Plus, increase the max level as a % of the cap. People getting ridiculous money is actually good for parity in the league.

But if guys decide to take discounts to form a "superteam", it's their call.

I know right. At least with delonte he'd be taking his services to Cleveland at least 4 times.
Nixluva is posting triangle screen grabs, even when nobody asks - Fishmike. LOL So are we going to reference that thread like the bible now? "The thread of Wroten Page 14 post 9" - EnySpree

I think it's human nature to want to work in the best environment you can and for an organization that has a strong chance of succeeding. I don't think the NBA should try to stop that. I don't think there's anything magical about a player re-signing with his current team. Durant stayed with OKC for 9 years. It seems like the default choice is already for the player to stay with his current team in most cases, but it's only a default, not a lock. That's seems perfect.

one easy fix is getting rid of guaranteed money and the salary cap-- the two concepts are in a death embrace for the league.
knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

The league is doing great. A long lockout over this would do more harm than good.

the league is doing great for now but it still feels like a bubble of sorts. there's another cap hike coming next year and i think we may witness some kind of tipping point in the midst of the hysteria that is sure to ensue.

too many teams and not enough talent, and what talent there is seems to be bunching up among only a few teams.
