This is the classic bait and switch trade. Everybody hears about the name player "Rose' and that's what the fans and media fixate on, but really it's all about the chess move 2 steps ahead.

Forget about 2016, think about 2017.

$60 million will get you into the Eastern Conference Finals easily AND we'll have our draft pick!!! Just don't sign any long terms and TANK HARD and it'll be check and mate very very soon.

Either the trade works, we appeal to more FAs, and then have a four headed monster of Rose, Melo, KP, and Gasol(?, etc) or it completely fails, Rose's salary goes away, and then the KNicks are in a great position to get a better draft pick and hopefully to get Melo to waive his no trade. I think either outcome is acceptable for the Knicks.
OR Rose simply plays pretty well. Not great but pretty well, Knicks win 45 games and get ousted in the semis. With Melo/KP and some decent role players already in place on a playoff team you can sign 2 max guys. There are a lot of good scenarios. The bad scenarios are very short term and even those have upside (good draft pick, etc)

I think Rose flat out upgrades the Knicks as a destination for potential FAs

I don't think the plan is to tank, yet the possibility isn't that frightening since we have our pick. But no, we aren't tanking.

Phil Jackson seems to want to compete this season and create a winning culture while setting himself up for the strong Free Agent Class of 2017. The plan does seem to be to make the playoffs next season, and in my opinion, a healthy Rose along with a few young players from this draft and some wise signings can definitely make that happen.

Best case scenario is that you win and go back to the playoffs. Worst case scenario is going to the lottery with your pick and 60 millions to spend.

Good job so far, Phil.

When was the last time Rose and Melo played a whole season?

Odds are heavily in favor of one or both missing significant time. Probably at the same time.

Seems to me to set up a Westbrook sign in 17. No Durant, just Russell being Batman with KP being Robyn as his and starting his fashion line in NY. Not sure where that leaves Melo

Speculation.

Truth is, both Melo and Rose will need their time off, but if handled correctly and if they remain relatively healthy, this team can definitely compete and make the playoffs in the East.

We are in a unique situation here for us where we have 3 highly skilled players at important positions like point guard, wing and the big man spot, while having money and means to add complimentary talent around them.

This is not like in the past where like a Marbury we are expecting Rose to come in and be the man and play like he did in his peak in Chicago. We are trading for the 15/5 version who plays about 30 minutes a night. Thats what we want from him. We want him to give that while Melo and KP do what they were doing last year, and hopefully more from KP. The way some are talking about this, its as if the Knicks are hoping Rose plays like a MVP. No, they know what Calderon/Lopez can net in a trade. They wanted better skill and balance of talent on their team. Like i said, last in the league in points in the paint and drives.

Correct with signing a big fish rose becomes the 4th fiddle possibly the 5th

Guys, Rose isn't gonna sit back and be the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th fiddle, he's playing for a new contract and last year was his first year of being back and playing a good amount of games so i think last year just primed him for next year and he's gonna give us everything he can. Now of course we need to get a legit backup PG to give Rose rest days and to keep his minutes in the low 30's but i think this move is the start of building this team for next year. I think we add a legit big man and a legit SG with the $30+ million we have and let it play out then after next year we either re-sign Rose or we use that money to replace him with one of the top level point guards that will be free agents in the 2017 free agent class cause we'll have the team to just slide a new PG into.

Do you ever see any positive in anything ever?? I don't think i can remember ever seeing a positive post from you which is crazy. The Knicks are in a really really good position these days with money, players and after this draft we even have all of our 1st round picks. What's to not like?????

?

I love the trade. It spells out 2017 is the year to go all in, not 2016.

It's a classic sacrifice your pawns before the check mate move. Seems like I'm saying something positive???

tank, get a great pick, use the boatload of cap room

how is this not a complete tank move?

fella's, welcome to the knicks version of the tank with a touch of the starphuck

The Rose trade probably placates Anthony in some ways...

...The fact that we have our #1 next year is a form of injury protection if Rose is hurt for any significant period of time and once again becomes overly concerned about being in pain in the future while watching his children doing Shakespeare in their school play.

I know this is a tongue in cheek thread, but there is no intention to tank.

maybe not direct intention but a strategic setup for it.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

It should hit you that its not brilliant. Its not a tank.
Keeping the draft pick is important.
Thats called a hedge. That is if injury disaster strikes.

a very calculated / likely hedge

This trade is strategic move not tactical.
The goal is to create team to compete on the high level for long period of time.
This competitive period is slated to come after 2017 so what will happen next season is irrelevant.
And trade does make sure it is irrelevant regardless on any possible 2016/17 season scenario.
The trade is also makes noise to satisfy casual fans, owner, press, and alike.
Brilliant all along.
