Fans want their favorite talking head to coach. Same fans secretly hope that coach causes a riff with management so they will fire Phil. Basically the same drama that's been happening the last 20 years. That's one of the non basketball related trains I want Rambis to stay
I'm fairly even keeled when it comes to the teams I root for. However in this case my gut feeling that Rambis is a train wreck.
Gut feelings aside nobody can explain why they don't like Rambis other than bringing up Minnesota. He's coached this team fine and reorganized everything after Fisher got fired.
Here are my thoughts -
1) His record this season was 9-19 (.321 Winning Percentage). I'm unsure how your quantify what the standards are by saying he's coached this team "Fine" and "reorganized everything"....but it is reasonable to think that if he was doing these things it would be reflective of a better winning percentage than his predecessor (Fisher 23-31 .426 Winning Percentage).
2) He's currently in place (and potentially will be permanently in place) - solely due to the Triangle. The smokescreen was that Fisher was fired due to off the court issues - however in reality it is more likely he was let go due to his deviation from the Triangle philosophy. Rambis is here to enforce the triangle - this creates the perception that he is here to be Jackson's yes man. While some may prefer this path, I am uncomfortable with this type of setup and would rather the team seek a coach with a more proven overall successful track record. In other words, I would rather the Coach supersede the system rather than the system superseding the coach.
3) He seemingly put his potential longer term job security over the team's longer term evaluation & growth potential process. As the team's Playoff hopes this season diminished and then evaporated completely - Rambis remained hesitant to play/evaluate the younger or lesser played roster members. It wasn't until Calderon's injury and near the very end of the season that Players like Grant could see more significant action as part of the evaluation & growth process.
4) He brings little to no energy
