Funny as GM it was Kerr that got Shaq and slowed the MDA machine down. Eventually Kerr replaced MDA with Terry Porter whom failed and they bought in Gentry to get it revved back up, the same Gentry who became his lead assistant in his rookie championship campaign!
Both are super fundamentally special players took aspects of the game to another level.
Back in the day growing up we all wanted the number 44 or 10. Clyde and Pistol were the cool guy's on the court!
I was waiting to see who was old enough to remember Pistol Pete, and not just from youtube clips. I'm jealous....I was born when the knicks won their last championship, so I missed some of these greats. But I'm also smart enough to understand Steph Curry is great for us just like Pistol Pete was great for others in his era. Both players come from basketball genes and grew up on the basketball court. Both were great shooters, with non traditional form. And both were entertainers with a small slim build. I need to watch Clydes old clips.....I couldn't describe his game. But growing up watching Alen Iverson, made me seach for Pistol Pete clips.....The 3 pt line forced Curry in a different type of offensive game. And I believe Pistol Pete would have been just as deadly from 3 as Curry.....Based on what I've read and heard about him.
Clyde was recently voted no. 9 of all time in PG's. he sacrificed his offense to be on a great team and get Earl his shots. He was a great defender. In time he might fall off the list. Chris Paul is ahead of him. Paul is great but what has he done?
Pistol Pete was an amazing shooter but it was his passing that was off the charts. The showmanship of skills was crazy. Curry was quicker and his release is quicker than Maravich but the range was there. Maravich played 4 years in college (three varsity as they did back then) and was polished when he hit the NBA floor. Problem was basketball was not ready for him and it was a problem for the Hawks to pay him double than any black player (ABA drove up salary)and his showboating did not yield wins. Todays NBA his skill set would have been embraced and he could have fit in better.
Curry is bigger and stronger now and more consistent. Its not like he was an overnite sensation. Right players, system, etc. Pete did not have this and then he got hurt. A manic depressive with some serious emotional baggage and an alcoholic doomed him in a time when not much was known about it. Curry seems to be a well rounded person who grew up with an NBA father so he understood better what to expect. Steph is married with kids and enjoys it. Pete was seemingly only comfortable with a basketball.
Offensively In prime Tony Parker is similar to Clyde. Tony got more points in the paint but clyde did a good job there too.
