Not to Wiggins! If your choice is to be a generational MVP talent, or just another HOFer wow... I could work with that.

you can put it in a positive light but the title was meant to take a shot at melo and it was not positive.

I don't see it as a shot. Melo wasn't an MVP-type player. There is no debating that. They are acknowledging him being great, but a step below the league's best. If it's meant to be a shot, it's not a very good one. Seems like just stating the obvious to me.

oh ... its a shot. Maybe you have to read between the lines.

it's a shot meant to get Knicks fans to click on the article.

Well it's a very poor "shot" because how they describe Melo is spot on.

It got you to click on the article, so I'd say it was a pretty accurate shot.

I would have clicked the article even if it said he was the next Travis Knight.

Fair enough. But I think they rag on Melo and the Knicks to get more engagement from Knicks fans - of which there are more of than most other teams. Also, a fair amount of the ESPN writers and staff are from the Northeast and actually are Knicks fans. And we know no one hates Melo more than a Knicks fan.

Yeah, only desperate Knicks fans would look at that title and think it was a compliment to Melo.
I'm not the biggest Melo fan but Wiggins has a long way to go just to get to Melo's level. Next MVP or Isiah Rider might have been a more accurate title.

Its is interesting that they would choose Melo as Wiggins plays nothing like Melo. The only thing I could see them trying to compare is that they feel Melo underachieved. Melo and Lebron were viewed and players that were going to take over the league Magic Johnson and Larry Bird style.

So they are most likely saying can Wiggins reach his full potential and be an MVP o& arguably best player in the NBA or underachieve. Since they don't feel he will be a bust who turns into a role player or out of the league. They must be saying Melo level is that step below that. Since Melo hasn't won any MVPs or anything its a fair viewpoint.

Melo is just a classic example of an elite player who falls short of "best in NBA" status because his game isn't rounded out enough. Whether or not people feel he has underachieved in his career depends on a lot of things. Same goes for someone like D Wilkins, an elite player in his own right, but significantly less successful in the NBA as Jordan, Bird, and Magic. Melo is the Dominique of this generation. So they are questioning if Wiggins will be the next player to fall into that category, or actually develop into a all-time great.

Fair comparison. Will Wiggins elevate into superstardom? Or just merely be an above average player.

I personally think he'll fall somewhere in between. He won't ever be Lebron or MJ great, but he'll certainly accomplish more in his career than Carmelo's ceiling. No knock on Melo, just see Wiggins as being able to make an All NBA 1st team at least once in his career, or even an All NBA Defensive team as he develops through the years.

What position will he end up at...a big 2, or a 3?

Is Rudy Gay a better comp?

How do people react to this is Anthony is still on Denver?

Assists...rebounds...3pt shooting...is Wiggins actually heading toward becoming a SF version of DeMar DeRozan.

Anthony has been a very good volume scorer, and is OK in other areas of the game, but for the most part you don't think of him is a transcendent talent who "makes others better" by design or a guy who can usually dominate a game except as a scorer.

Every player will have moments where they do other things to help a team win, but when you think of Anthony the first thing which comes to mind is his ability to put the ball in the basket.

Wiggins has averaged about 36MPG and has been a poor rebounder for his size and athletic ability. His passing and 3 pt shooting have declined this year so far, which I find puzzling, since I would have thought that working on his 3 pt shot was a priority for him in the offseason. His steals have also dropped, which is odd for an athletic and long player like Wiggins.

I don't have ESPN Insider, so I can't really comment much on the article.

Its very early in Wiggins' career, and I have not seen him play a ton of games, but right now he seems like an athletic slasher and midrange scorer, who is a sub-par rebounder, passer, and distance shooter. No MVP candidate in the waiting, IMO.

Here is where you continue to be wrong. Melo is much more than "merely an above average player" in your words. "Merely above average" does not equal first ballot hall of fame, which is what Melo will be. "Merely above average" is Robin Lopez or Aaron Afflalo.

While the Melo Hater engorged loins swell at the validation potential to convince the Mooby worshipers otherwise, the implied (Kobe like)expectations could have easily have said:

"Is Wiggins potential Kobe, or will he just be a big time scorer?)

That don't stir the pot as much.

Melo is a Wilkins,a McGrady,a Big Dog,a Dantley, and a Vince Carter. An elite Wing but not elite enough to carry a team all season and beyond by himself.

I'll be fine. Melo, "first ballot Hall of Famer" means a different thing nowadays it seems.

I mean he's no all time great. Not even top 5 in his era. He has no great records or fantastic stat numbers to really make him a certified "lock". More players in his draft class or around his draft class have Championship rings, NBA records, crazy statistical seasons, all NBA first team appearances, all NBA defensive team appearances. He doesn't stand out, so I think Hall voters may have to think long and hard about voting in Melo on the first try.

They would not say the next Patrick Ewing. Ewing never won an MVP or a ring. That is because players like Ewing are great regardless of rings or mvp's. They gave it their all every night.

Melo is that guy who coming into the NBA and really early you thought that this guy will just be off the charts however he never lived up to what he could be because of a mental block that made him care (or believe) way too much about HIS shots and buckets and not always about defense and/or passing. Basically a selfish player.

Barkley and Malone won mvp's late but never rings and of course even before their rings, no one would have made such a comparison with them.

At this point, do you guys think Wiggins would do more for the Cavs than Kevin Love? (I actually never see the two play.
Are the Cavs chances better for a championship this year with Wiggins, next, etc.?

Of course you feel this way. Bottom line is the dude is top 40 and everyone in front of him is in the HOF except Ray Allen and other active players. Ray-Ray is going in.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/pts_career.html

This is not the "NBA HOF", its the "Basketball HOF". Melo has a few gold metals and an NCAA chip. If he plays two more years after this and can score 1800 pts per season he has a chance to crack top 10 in points of all time. If not he can easily get top 15. He started the season at no. 38.

Chuck, the vomit might hit the back of your throat but Melo is a first Ballot kind of guy. While second year might be a possibility , who will care of that fact other than you?

Don't know why you even entertained this. Merely an above average player was purposely planted to get a response.

So basically your saying they are only using Melo's name to reference a player who underachieved due to selfishness and inability to make others better or be an all around player.

pretty much ... however, he did make others better, just not on the level that was expected of a player who is that talented and has such high expectations.

so here is what phil is thinking ....
