Then again - there's no way the Bulls do this trade. They have the Derrick Rose contract on their books for two more years and he is another injury away from being total dead weight. Melo is the same way, except he's got three more years after this year. THREE MORE YEARS AFTER THIS YEAR.

If Melo gets right and his jumper recovers he'll have trade value. Until then he is a big risk with a huge contract.

martin, do you really think that these scenarios are not nonsense? I suggested a mid first rounder and an ok PG and you asked me why I am posting that nonsense. Of course it would have to be workable and it may have to be a multiple team trade, but ideas like this are not nonsense?

so here is what phil is thinking ....

because you didn't put any details behind it and this deal is much better.

Portis and Mirotic are both first round picks and there was an included future round pick, for a total of 3. Noah is a starting C on most teams.

Your first reply in that thread was:

how about if we trade him for very very little (or nothing) just to get him off our cap so that we can sign a star?

Your second was

a mid first rounder and an ok pg (like a jarret jack type or Andre Miller of 3 years ago?

So basically you'd be OK with giving Melo away for nothing or giving him away for a mid first rounder and a backup PG.

Those two things are complete nonsense to me.

People keep overlooking the trade kicker, which has to be cap cleared separate from the trade matching rules. Any team over the cap cannot take on Melo's contract, which would convert to a max contract. After trade matching, the receiving team would need to have the cap space to cover the distance between Melo's existing contract and a max contract.

Not 'impossible' but very limited and unlikely. Only Utah, Philly and Portland have room to accept a trade kicked Melo. Other teams would have to clear cap first, then match Melo under trade rules.

You know I gonna spin wit it

Certainly not me.
We could then make a trade to offload Caledron and some other pieces for an athletic guard who can really break down defenses.

If you play out this scenario...during the FA period use the $2.8 for Shved, still sign Aflalo, O'Quinn, Lopez, and perhaps Williams...and you go into the season with a similar team, except Shved/Portis are substituted for Grant/Seraphin.

Still don't know how Grant will turn out, though. If he doesn't eventually work out Jackson will take a hit.

Funny thing is that on draft night, many felt the Knicks' draft was saved with the acquisition of Grant, since folks thought KP was more of a project than prospect for this season.

Strange how things are looking different, now.

I would rather do a deal with the Celtics- if they are still doing well by the all star break, and we are in the depths of losing, Melo may be willing to join them. They have lots of spare pieces, so I think you could get a pretty good hall whilst they wouldn't be gutting their team. I'd like either Marcus Smart or Avery Bradley.

So you think that this package of gold is more inline with what Melo is worth? If you think that Melo is worth 3 first round picks and Noah then you have lost your mind man. We are not talking about the Melo of two years ago. This Melo is not worth much. He would have to have a number of really good games to increase his value.

Right now, he has no lift, can't finish in traffic, not a good defender (even if he is trying harder), can't really shoot with consistency from anywhere, and still shoots and thinks that he is a top 5 player.

I know its only 20ish games but its been a long time since we saw good Melo and I'm not that we will ever see it again. If he is getting older and losing explosiveness then he would have to change his game in a number of ways to be even close to worth his contract.

With all these glaring concerns, there is no way that any team would give up that much for him. Maybe a little more then I proposed but not much more.

And of course the trade kicker and the NTC greatly reduce the knicks leverage in what they can get for him.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

wait ... what am I missing about Portis? Has he shown anything this year? You keep saying that we missed out and him and should have taken him instead of Grant. I assumed that he was killing it ....

He is averaging 4.9 rebounds per 36 as a center.

Where is he shining?

I said I would do the deal in a heartbeat, not what I thought Melo is worth. You think he is worth giving away for nothing, which is utter crap trade.

The Bulls say no!

This is trade rape. Chicago says no and laughs hysterically while
The Knicks would do this in a split second and soil their pants. This is pure fantasy though Chicago would never ever ever ever agree to this deal.
