I say given the hype and NY factor (not to mention the more than solid play), KP has a good chance to get voted in. I just hope he doesn't get voted in over Melo. That probably would be a disaster.

I actually hope KP doesn't get in because he needs to earn it first and pay his dues. He's going to be great, but he's not there yet. We don't want to take any chances with him getting complacent, not that he has shown any indication he ever would, but let him earn it first. It is different for guys like Kobe or Wade or pretty soon Melo, who are legacy picks. Let KP earn it and put up all-star numbers first.

Isn't he though? He's having an All Star campaign. He's earned it already. He should represent the Knicks as one of the best Power Forwards in the East, and the Knicks best player.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/statistics/_/position/pf/league/east

Nah, hard to make the case he makes roster on objective merit. There are several front court players more deserving.

Like?

Milsap, Bosh, and then a lot of this group- http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/statistics/_/position/c/league/east

Remember, starters aren't picked by position, just front court and back court. I doubt Bosh or Milsap get voted on, so they're ahead in the coach's selection pecking order for 4s.

Be awesome if voted in as that's what the game is all about and I'm all for that, but hard to make a case on selection by merit, particularly on PER as you seem to be offering it as your case.

They'll be many, many years to come for that.

Or he could explode and lap a few of the others before the game.

Milsap and Bosh and Drummond aren't household names so that isn't a roadblock wise. Love is the only potential starter that might give KP trouble.

Merit wise, Only Drummond with his 19 double doubles has an edge over Kristaps. KP has the edge in most other categories.

If he can beat Love and Drummond vote wise, then he'll be one of the starters at F. If he continues his torrid pace of late, he'll be voted on as a reserve regardless. Somehow his Field goal percentage jumped up to 46% from 40%!!!!

Starter and merit are two different equations. I understood you to be focusing on merit.

James is one front court starter. Gasol has a large international following and was the East's second leading vote getter last season. KP could very well slide in at the 3rd starter.

If not, however, based on merit, as i say, lots of 4s and 5s ahead of him.

KP could get in either way. Either as Starter from fan vote or merit based as a coach selected reserve.

Only Drummond and Love are really in the way. Don't see Pau getting the same amount of votes he has in the past with KP on the ballot. If KP continues his pace, he'll surpass Pau merit wise as well.

Domino issue. If KP doesn't get voted in (which he well may) the best EC front court players right now aren't big names/votegetters. Meaning IF KP isn't voted, probably two less deserving players will, as a result making the reserves (merit) much harder to crack.

Drummond and Milsap got little support last year Horford too. KP's best shot is starter, which he doesn't deserve on merit as of today.

Especially given the Knicks record? Didn't Melo make it to All Star games the last 2 stink seasons? Didn't he decide to not shut it down even and play in it last season, even though the Knicks season was an abomination of pro team sports?

KP is actually leading the Knicks to more victories than Melo has the last 2 years, and his numbers speak for themself.

Please read the above quotes i made. As i stated before, it is generally accepted players like Wade, Kobe, and even someone like Melo who did not deserve to start in the all-star game last year, be voted as legacy players who have earned those spots for a career of great basketball. You are so busy trying to make your point that you do not read. Again i will say, KP has not earned the right to be voted as a starter in the NBA all-Star game, so i do not think he should get there over a guy like Melo. By next season, if he is averaging 20 and 10 and having an improved impact on wins, then he deserves it. But you do not hand it to him for half a season of great rookie season basketball. These are fans and coaches voting. They aren't chasing advanced metrics like you are to try and support a point. There is merit involved.

What if KP's average edges closer to say 19 and 10 and over 2 blocks on 50%FG by the end of December? What say you then?

If he's averaging 19-20 and 10 rebs by all-star voting is closed, different story. But i'm judging him on 15 and 9. And again, i understand you can pull some advanced metrics that say his impact is at an all-star level, but like said before, these are fans and coaches voting, not mathematicians. Melo is averaging 22 and 7, and while he is not having the overall impact on both ends, he should be the guy until either the knicks are successful enough as a team to have 2 all-stars, or KP stats trump Melo's, which its still not close.

But KP's stats do trump Melo's already?!?!

Am I in bizarro world? Only thing Melo has on KP is points per game, and that's because of volume. Have you seen KP's field goal % or TS% or whatever metric shooting the last 6 games or so? 10 double doubles already, how many does Melo have?

Melo isn't an all time great, he doesn't need a legacy vote into the All Star game. Let's see who the fans vote in.

No, he's not there yet, especially given the knicks record.

Am I in bizarro world?

Yes. I am glad you finally understand.

Correct answer of course is neither Melo or KP deserves a role based on merit right now.

If fans want to vote either or both as starters, okay by me.

I think that KP gets voted in.

Fans probably want to see him more than (almost) any other player.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

So when some of the most fervent hockey fans in the world could spend nothing and still make an impact on the sport, they went all out. Girgensons led the NHL all-star voting from the get-go and finished ahead of Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin and everyone else with 1,574,896 votes.

Yup, as I say, neither Curry or James got that much. If KP just receives just that many votes, and KP is better known and has a high profile as an NBA player than Girgensons had as an NHL player, he'll start for the East.

Lightning may not strike twice, but it's entirely possible… and I think the NBA would love it.

I can see a country like Latvia being big with hockey, is it same with basketball?

Good question ;-). I don't know… but does Girgensons have a rap song?

Yes, the KP song is actually a bite of the Girgensons. You guys need to frikkin educate yourselves on the latvian rap scene man, jeezus h christ man. A little google search man.

Everything in moderation. Even moderation.

This is why you don't discuss KP being at an all-star level yet. He had 4 points and 3 rebs last night and was very flat. He's a rookie, you can't forget that. He will have his ups and downs. By next season he will hopefully be a star and put up consistent numbers, but for now, he is still a rookie prone to lapses and games where he looks lost. And thats ok.

That's all well and good, but what do you have to say about Melo's performance last night?

You can't just call out the rookie who's had his first bad game in awhile to the perennial all star that's been underperforming all season long.

My point has nothing to do with Melo. I am making a point about KP. If Melo doesn't deserve it, he doesn't deserve it. The beginning argument was KP should not make it over Melo, not that Melo should make it on his performance. But if the knicks slide continues, neither player deserves it. What i was telling you is KP is still a rookie. Don't overhype him by pointing out some advanced stats. We understand he is good, but he is not a star yet. And there is a reason guys like Kawhi Leonard (who was DPOY) and Draymond Green did not make all-star teams last season. Advanced stats guys don't make all-star games, so using that as your main argument to KP making it this year is pointless. Green and Kawhi likely make it this season because they are putting up big numbers. Melo is still averaging 21/7 while KP is averaging 14/9. The all-star voting from players and coaches is a dumbed-down process of letting guys in who are household names, can take over a game at any time, and put up big scoring numbers on a regular basis.

I am from Latvia. From capital Riga. left to US at 33.
Was in Liepaja a lot.
Latvian clubs always competed on a high level in USSR tournaments and euro-ball.
BBal is as big in Latvia as Hockey if not even bigger.
There are 2 million people in Latvia altogether but a lot of Latvians are leaving all over the world.
Votes may come from Lithuania, Estonia , Spain and other EU countries. They know KP.
