Am I wrong in thinking that in some ways it seems like the NBA guard situation is going back to the days when I started watching the game...when there were no PG/SG designations.

Don't see why Johnson, who is about 6'3.5," can't be a combo guard on the Knicks, and that down the line, he and Grant could be a nice guard combo.

Have to think that Miami will find some way to keep him, though.

I think you know the lowdown with Miami, they in deep doo-doo with the cap and Whiteside, can't go over it to sign him. Makes the math tough, someone not coming back.

can't see how they can let him go. Wade is getting older and he is a big part of the future with the way he is playing. Whiteside is still a nut job waiting to explode. Tyler shooting is just off the charts even if it comes down a bit.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

The salary chart I saw has them at $48M in guaranteed $$ for next year.

I'm never able to figure out the maximum amount you can pay players.

I would think they'd have to find a way to pay Whiteside and Wade. If Johnson actually wants to stay, could he take the qualifying offer and then get his money the following year? Is 2017/8 the year when the Cap really jumps?

Doesn't anyone think that players might actually want to remain in a good situation if they can?

I figure that I am ignorant in thinking a player might take $10M instead of $12M to stay in a good situation.

What difference is there tax-wise between Florida and other states, by the way?

You also need to factor in cap holds and empty roster spot charges. Wade cap hold will be huge so if they want to keep him they will need to sign him to a cap friendly deal fast in the process. Luol will probably be on his way out to create enough space.

states with no income tax are most regressive.

Screws the lower end big time. Places higher burden on them.
Good for NBA players.

Johnson and Whiteside are two examples of players Miami picked up off the scrap heap and developed into productive NBA talent. Why would they not keep them? They are Miami's future.

It's that time of year again when our team sucks so bad that we all drool over productive players on other teams and college kids getting ready to declare for the draft....it's the cycle of being a Knicks fan

Johnson is an impressive athlete, shows much greater upside than Galloway as combo guard but he's a restricted free agent and the highly likely that Heat match other offers since he's under the Gilbert Arenas rule in which no team can offer Johnson more than the equivalent of the $6 million mid-level exception next season. Rookie the poster is right about Miami unearthing some gems. That team is very athletic which makes it difficult for us to compete agaisnt
