Me?...I have no ax to grind with him about his personality over the years or what he's done, and you can't get blame him for his injuries the past few years. You can make a case, though, that when you look at the money he's getting, his on-court performance, the cap inflexibility his max contract creates, and now, the way he doesn't seem to step back as a player to let a guy like Russell step up, his final 3 years are not going to look too good almost any way you are looking at them, and the enabling Scott is doing does not help things, either.
Here's how I actually see it. No player on that current team is being hindered by Kobe's shooting and play soaking. D'angelo is struggling because he isnt adjusting to the NBA well. Out of all the starters, Kobe plays the least amount of minutes. i also feel two other things have shaped up what we are seeing....the trade that was blocked and the signing of Steve Nash. Kobe imo would have had more titles under his belt if 1) the league left things alone and 2) Lakers have a more dynamic team. Kobe's slary merely prevents max players who arent coming there from coming there. We'll see how things shape up after he's gone
???? Might want to check out the minutes comment...He and Clarkson are the only guys over 30MPG...Kobe just about plays more than than anyone on the team.
If they are actually trying to tank to keep their pick...that is one thing, but if not, they are not exactly making the Lakers look like a landing spot for FA.
KP's emergence has added a wrinkle to our FA future because he becomes an attraction. You could see Towns drawing notice, and what big man wouldn't think about Mudiay playing with him on the pick and roll.
There has to be doubt about Russell as a franchise maker at this point, even though it is much too early.
What if the Russell we see know is the one you see at the end of the year- and the Lakers don't end up top 3 in the draft and lose their pick to Philly?
You have to put up with Young and Williams for 3 years if you include this season, and if top FA's continue go to teams with a chance to win-why would they come to LA next year, other than the aura of being a Laker. Who knows if Clarkson even wants to remain with the team?
Just an unfortunate situation for that team. I have no issues at all with them being bad, would love to see them be mediocre and not get any great draft picks, but it is not going to be any kind of triumphant final season for Kobe, and IMO he might be holding Russell back.
EnySpree: Can we agree to agree not to mention Phil Jackson and triangle for the rest of our lives?
