He's got that smooth, playmaking ability and shooting ability that would fit in well here. I think he can play SG too. He, Affalo, Grant, and Galloway is a nice mix at the 1 and 2, with Batum playing some minutes at the 3 as well. Also, I would like to see if we can grab Noah for cheaper, but only if he's willing to come off the bench. Lopez is the starter, we are paying him for that. Noah seems to really be taking a step back, even if all the injuries, but splitting the center minutes pretty evenly between Lopez and Noah might be a good situation for both players. It keeps the minutes manageable for both of them to stay healthy and efficient. So those would be my targets. Lopez, Melo, Batum, and an improved Porzingis and Grant starting with Galloway, Afflalo, Noah, Dwill, O'Quinn, Lance and Early is a loaded, deep team.

That's an interesting take. Batum and Noah. Do the Knicks have enough $ for both? $19M before cutting Jose. I like those additions.

Hermangomez will be coming next yr. I see Phil continuing to look develop young players over aging vets. So I don't know if he will push for a Noah.

I don't know if Early has it in him to be the facilitator that Batum is. Early is more in the D.Will mold of off ball slasher and 3s. Early has potential though if he puts in the work. He has improved his ball handling some. Well enough to drive in the paint while staying in control. If he eats and breaths basketball like Butler did. He can be a starter in this league.

Agreed. He probably will make more than 12 mil in his new deal, probably closer to 15. I would pay him because he's a great fit. No room for Noah with that, but definitely can find a backup PG with the remaining 4-5 mil. That would be a good free agency haul. And with O'Quinn and Amundson playing backup center time, and Dwill and Lance playing mostly backup 4, we should have plenty up front.

Agreed. Batum and a backup PG is more than enough, we should be fine up front.

No Batum and Noah Depends on Afflalo, Williams, and Calderon. If Williams and Afflalo opt out it would give the Knicks a Cap total of $52m+ and what ever low qualifying offer Gallo will have plus the cap holds of the empty roster spots. So lets break it down:

The knicks would have 6 players w.guaranteed contracts = $52m-55m+

The knicks would also have Gallo's($1.2m+) and Early's($1.2m) Cap holds = $2.4m+

Then you have the 6 empty roster charges($540k each) for being under the minimum 12 spots. $540K x 6 = $3.2m+

So the Knicks estimated total salary would be $57.6m - $60.6m+

The estimated NBA cap is $89m, so the knicks would have $89m - ($57.6m - $60.6m) = $28.4m - $31.4m to spend in FA.

I would assume Batum would get/ask for Paul Millsap type money so that is around $20m+ per leaving $8-11m left to fill out your roster. Remember that they can go over the cap to resign Early and Gallo.

nicely done... thanks for this man. Good stuff. Exactly the #s I was thinking:
$20m to Batum, $12mm to Noah to back up Lopez (and probably finish) but play limited minutes to extend his career
resign Gallo and Early
Grant/Jose
Batum/Galloway
Melo/Early
KP/KOQ
Rolo/Noah

That is a deep lineup with some very long athletic defenders and some shooters.

The problem with the Noah money is that you also need to factor in Willy Gs contract. So that will take some of the extra money if they signed Batum. One positive is that while Batum contract could avg 20m it doesn't mean it has to start there. The hope would be to get him to sign a contract with a base salary of $18.5 - $19m. That 1.5m could be the difference in signing a Noah because you could use those savings to sign Willy G if he asks for late 1st rd type money. I would expect them to ask Noah to do the same to maybe go out and get an Beno Udriah type back up PG.

the one interesting thing with Noah is that he was the one recruiting Melo to come to Chicago and I'd imagine he would love to be back in NY. Noah as a Knick would be epic.

My hope would be that they could get Calderon off the books some how without giving up Willy G or a 1st. That's a huge stretch. That way they could bring back Afflalo and have him as a back up 2/3.

He is worth it in my opinion, He would give us a nice mix at the 2 and 3 Melo, Batum, and Affalo becoming the 6th man. Batum backs up Melo at the 3, good deal

I'm hoping that having 2 of Batum's teammates on our roster, Afflalo and Rolo, might give us the inside track.
