Most teams run heavy PNR so it all depends on what PNR coverage you use. Against MCW and Monroe, I would go under and through to make MCW and Monroe shoot, and guard the drive. Then there are no defensive rotations and no Copeland or Middleton open. We did that at times against the bucks. Against Atlanta it's tougher. You absolutely have to deny Korver everything. So when they go high PNR with Teague or Schroder you can't be predictable. I would switch it and make them beat you. If they become too effective, I woukd ice the PNR where you force it sideline/baseline but you can be vulnerable to the pick and pop, so that's where you have to pick your poison bevause Paul and Al can kill you from outside.
You can always hedge or trap the guard which is great to mix in but isn't an effective defense anymore for long stretches with the shooting and spacing of teams.
Also keeping the ball away from the middle and only helping from the weakside is key. Consistency and discipline are important. That's how you limit teams from lighting it up
Defending the pick and roll and resulting 3s starts well before the screen comes.
1) Defend from the inbound without trapping to cut shot clock. Keep teams from running multiple pick and rolls on 1 possession.
2) a) Deny the preferred ball handler by fronting pre-catch with length and maintain a "partial" team help position to hedge against the backdoor. Keep the catch away from the middle of the court to limit the pick approach and drive angles.
b) If the preferred handler has control of the ball coming up the court, intercept the route of the preferred pick man and zone the weakside with 1 defender. Be prepared for a counter weakside curl/flare play and switch weakside assignments as necessary.
c) The on-ball defender: Angle the stance in advance to guide the ball handler into the pick.
Know the weaknesses of each strategy and space the defense in anticipation of the threat. Have designated individuals with a view of the offense (1 strong side floor, 1 weakside floor and 1 on the bench) alert the defense - i.e. horns, weakside action etc.
Being able to guard multiple positions is a clear plus. KP has the brains and mobility to be a huge asset in this regard.
Sh-t in the popcorn to go with sh-t on the court. Its a theme show like Medieval times.
