Phil intimated that it was Monroe's Agent that wanted the Knicks involved early and so Phil did that favor. There's more to playing the GM game than is clear on the surface. I Think it also played into Phil's purposes to let things play out the way they did. IMO based on everything we know I'm convinced Phil didn't really want Monroe. We drafted KP and Willy and made serious efforts to get DeAndre and RoLo. They are the Defensive bigs Phil stated over and over were his priority.

No the Knicks F.O. making Monroe the FA they met with says he was their first priority. Then again wasting time meeting with someone you don't want is always a good method.

You're really not thinking it thru at all. If Phil wanted Monroe he had the money to offer him a contract but never did. It was a favor to the agent to make the Knicks the 1st stop.

"Greg went to the right spot," Jackson said. "That's the right place for him. We understand that entirely. In fact, we discussed even with our meeting about our hopes and how it was going to go and what we were looking for. He was the first stop on the way, but it wasn't that. They had set it up that way. We had talked to him, and it was according to plan."

Phil is hinting that they prearranged that the Knicks would meet with Monroe 1st but Phil never said he offered a contract. Instead it was just the 1st stop.

Lol, Monroe was the very first free agent we met with and we were the first team Monroe met with. Lopez was the 3rd and that's only because Aldridge cancelled on us. We didn't sign Lopez to a contract until Monroe, Aldridge, and DeAndre all agreed to sign somewhere else.

Begley had nothing to write about...

Yup...Begley just took selected items to create a story from things many of us had already heard and read...which is fine, but folks are seeing the Melo as PF comment without considering the matchup/flexibility aspect.

We will have wasted a lot of roster space if Anthony plays the bulk of his minutes at PF.

Yeah you seem to be unable to see that Phil was most interested in DeAndre and that as he said Monroe's Agent set it up that they'd meet with NY 1st. Phil had to wait on DeAndre but made sure negotiations with RoLo were already on at that point. Just cuz Phil did his due diligence with meeting Monroe 1st doesn't mean he was Phil's Top Priority. If you read what Phil said the order of the meeting was Monroe's Agent's idea.

Phil's last statement is his way of making clear it was not that Monroe was his primary target, but rather that it was Monroe's Agents desire to have it go in that order. After drafting KP it's understandable that Phil would prefer DeAndre or RoLo as a defensive anchor as KP has the offensive game at PF/C. Phil desired a defensive big

Folks say things after the fact, they always do. Phil was certainly interested in Greg Monroe, perhaps that changed a notch after the draft, but to think there was no interest is being delusional.

This was not the kind of competitive fire Jackson wants -- and demands -- from his players. As a result, Jackson is already thinking about possible free agents he might pursue in the offseason.

"Greg Monroe, for sure. He can hold his spot in the low post and he's a good passer. His issues are his court speed and if he can defend."

I was a bit surprised at Phil's interest in Jordan because of his offensive deficiencies. I was obviously wrong, but it makes you realize that Jackson was truly emphasizing D from the C position.

Maybe he hoped to get Monroe for less $$ than the 17+M he got from the Bucks, and once he realized what Monroe was looking for he shied away. Heis a very limited defender, and quite slow. I like some of the things he can do on offense, but I can see the benefit of not signing him.

IMO, O'Quinn is a much more economical version of Monroe.

Phil mentioned Monroe at some point in a list that included Jordan, and I think Lopez, among others, but I think he also noted Monroe's defensive deficiencies.

I think Rosen's talk of big butts was another reason we were looking at Monroe...

Monroe on a long list of bigs as potential targets, and his remarks on Monroe seem tepid at best. In that paragraph Phil only really expresses interest in Jordan.

Melo, DWill and Early can all play SF. We'll be just fine.

Other than the fact that Williams and Early are horrible basketball players we'll be fine.

Yeah you seem to be unable to see that just because something happens doesn't mean that it was part of any sort of plan. That despite our long history of success just because something happens doesn't mean it was part of any plan. Monroe was the very first player that we met and we, reportedly, offered him a max deal.

maybe they didn't offer the max amount because they spent more than they wanted on melo. how much do the lakers need to pay bryant?

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

Pretty sure it was reported at the time that Phil tried to convince Monroe to take a little less so that he could bring in more guys. However, I don't think that was ever linked to a credible source.

Is Monroe actually on a max deal? I was reading back then he signed a three year deal with the Bucks. But either way, I dont see why the agent would lie when he's already secured his client the deal.

I remember Phil saying that they had several combinations of FA acquisitions and the one they ended up with was one of them except for DWill who was not originally in the plans. This summer wasn't Phil just flailing wildly. There was a lot of planning. If Phil wanted Monroe so bad that he was a must get he could've made a max offer plus a No Trade or ETO. I don't believe he was that hard up for Monroe based on how things went down.

Monroe may have picked the Knicks if they were appearing like a playoff team, which they werent at the time. The Bucks on the other hand made the playoffs without Jabari Parker. Really that simple. Monroe was in the plans, doesnt matter if he was a main plan or not, he was in it and if acquired Phil would have said no different than he is saying now....we got who we wanted.
