I think cole is a good PG. He exceeded my expectations as the key PG on the heat. As we speak, Knicks are showing interest.....But may not have the funds now, after signing Seraphin, my maryland live casino buddy.....He's a big "black jack" player (poker is my game). He's not 7feet, but he played well during his last year with Washington. After meeting him, I started to watch him play during the second half of the season.....And I thought he played well enough to receive more minutes. I think Cole is another solid rotation vet we need! Neither guys are locker room cancers, so it's a low risk move.

you are just mr optimist today

poker is by far my favorite sport. Do you play limit or no limit?

You know, when you tell somebody your a knick fan, their very next word is something negative. I can't tell you how many times I heard catchy negative phrases about the knicks over a 20 year span. And 95% of it was negative (half empty). So it's the negativity / half empty comments that makes me see the optimistic side.

Some see life half full.....Some see life half empty. Then you have me, I see both sides! If I come into a discussion thats mustly half empty.....I feel like its my purpose to protect the half full side.......and vice versa.

Man, I've been on a crazy run playing no limit poker. If you play, then you understand.....I hit the bad beat one day, then changed tables and hit the high hand in the same day. Walked in with 200 cash.....(always leave credit cards in the car)......Walked out with 1900 cash.

of course things are negative. for years, this franchise has been a laughing stock. you need to earn your way out.

200 -> 1900? VERY NICE! are you up overall? Do you track your play?

I don't track.....it's too depressing. If you understand this world, you are never up. So I try to forget the past and move forward. Otherwise you tend to chase the money you lost, and begin losing more! vs Starting all over, changing up your strategy and learn from your mistakes. Once I think like this, I win......So the short answer is no. But most people I play with do.

I'm married, so I really don't have a lot of time to play. But when I do, it's usually a full day. We should try and get a UK power game going....Somewhere between NY and Maryland.....

every player who plays a lot tracks. I don't play that much now but I used to play a few times a week in pretty high stakes. I was an aggressive / conservative player. I read pretty much every poker book and studied the odds pretty well.

I needed to stop because I was obsessed with it and of course my wife was not happy even though I was making good money.

Never touch black jack or any of the other games that guarantee that you will be a long term loser based on the odds.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

Sorry this turned into a poker / gambling thread....But i agree....Anything outside of poker (within the casino) is mostly based on luck. Poker at least involves some level of skill. Blackjack used to be my game of choice. It's easy to learn and it's quick. Poker can take several valuable hours out of your day. And I've read all the books as well. But I wouldn't say I'm an aggressive player. But I love playing on aggressive tables. If I was single, I would live in the casino (like most devorced or single guys now)....Usually I use this site to past time, while I wait for a big hand. It's good to hear somebody had some success at this game. I've been on a down streak lately and realized I had to play at a higher table, then I started winning.....Very strange, but higher tables is real poker. Lower tables is luck and I haven't won at the low buy in tables in months / years (other than the bad beat I hit).

you can win at the lower table as well. You just need a different strategy. The lower tables have the bad players who tend to fish a lot. You need to exploit these guys and trap them.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

Cole would be a great pick up. Wanted to draft him over Shump. Cole plays very good D, does a good job of setting up teammates, and I cant remember the last time he was out with an injury. His biggest knock is his shooting which can be erratic, but Cole is steady in other aspects of his game.

I tend to agree. The PG market has really dried up.. I definitely agree with Ned--very concerned about the PG depth on this team, backcourt depth in general. Been saying it for weeks. Calderon's borderline done, I really like Grant but the fact remains he is a rookie (there will be some growing pains I'm sure) and I'm not sold on Galloway as an NBA 2G, let alone at the point. This dude Cole has game--he's tough, has championship experience, he's not too old, quick and pretty talented. I feel he's too good a player for N.O. to let walk out the door on a vet minimum offer w/o matching. Yet we have interest supposedly. So what's our play? How do we get him? Would have to be via trade -- would something like Early for a resigned Norris Cole work? We get a good backup PG (> Galloway) to work the position with Grant for the now and future (Calderon takes a backseat to a Grant/Cole duo which wouldn't be terrible--far from it), it would help stabilize the PG spot and improve overall backcourt depth in general plus we open up an extra spot to sign Thanasis. The more video I look at, I really like Thanasis' overall game--I think he could help us on both ends and wind up giving us more than Early in the long run. I like TA's ability to play some 2G as well, something Early can't do. I dunno--make any sense??

I don't know why people are down on him. If we get Cole for the Vet minimum, everybody should jump up with cheers. Thats how slim of a chance I think we have in getting this guy. But he's a NYC type PG. Plays solid defense and knows how to run the point and contribute, eventhough he's not the main focus. He's not afraid of the big shots either. It would be a good fit for this NYC culture. I just don't know how Phil sees him. But with the market drying up, Cole's value will only increase, and somebody will offer him more than the vet minimum.

Vet min 1.4m for Cole....sure why not?

Doesn't hurt nor help either way. Our PG play hinges if Jerian progresses enough to wrangle away the starters cap from Calderon and keeps the job.

The larger point is that we can't get him for simply the veteran minimum because the Pelican's will just match.

It would have to be some type of trade.

Only pieces we have that could work would be Calderon, Galloway, Early, Greek II and W-Hernangomez and I don't want to give up on Willie for Coles.

I think Early has negative value around the league --- some may have mild interest in Greek II ---- no idea if anyone would value Calderon.

I would think of the 4 I mentioned above Hernangomez would have most appeal around the league but someone/something else would have to go back to make $ match - I think.

I wonder if Knicks would consider selling high on Galloway to get Cole --- not sure I would do that not sure I wouldn't.

I'm not a big Galloway fan.....I think he's stuck between two positions and doesn't do anything great. He's a decent defender, against certain players.....and a decent shooter, but very streaky. I rather have Cole because he has a defined position, and hes a better PG prospect. But without Gallo, our SG depth is reduced even more.
