I'd be pretty surprised if he didn't just stay in Houston - he makes sense there and played well for them.

He played TERRIBLE in houston!

If this is what appeases Melo then therin lies the problem.

His advanced stats are at least as good as Afflalo's.

perfect!

lol
Would you say Afflalo's career has been "TERRIBLE"?

it was ok in denver and pretty bad everywhere else.

guess who was with him in Denver? MELOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

lets rekindle the bromance.

At least Afflalo is not an idiot.

Well if we're going back a few years, that puts Smith ahead of Afflalo. We're talking about at most the 2.8 mil exception, right? I'd rather have a mediocre idiot for 2.8 mil than a mediocre nice guy for 16 mil/2 yrs. Don't forget that Morey, who knows more about the advanced stats than we do, thought Smith on a cheap contract was worthwhile.

so why is Morey not resigning him?

Fair question. (I suppose I walked right into that!) I don't know. Do they have the 2.8 mil room exception?

yup.

listen ... he is a very good and very versatile defender. His shot selection is atrocious and he was basically run out of detroit. Houston was the perfect place for him and I think that helped him a bit with his reputation. However, he is know to be difficult to coach. Is this a guy that we want around this team? It seems that Phil is looking for a better environment and better character players.

why derrick williams? good question, I guessed that I walked into that :-)

so here is what phil is thinking ....

Smith is an awesome all around player, stat sheet filler, fantasy league favorite esp for his shot blocking prowess. Biggest question mark is his bball iq and poor shot selection - and whether that contributes to winning basketball.

Honestly, we don't need any more non-shooters. Phil needs to get a backup SG and a backup center and then we should be good.

Will have to reevaluate my rejuvenated love for Phil if he signs this guy.

Dumped by 2 teams in about a year or so...

He does not fit the profile of the type of player we are looking for.

Are any of the major reporters Tweeting about this?

Where would he play?

He can play the 4 or the 5..5 if we go small..He's a good athlete who block shots

Actually he fits skill-wise in what the knicks want from their players..versatility.
On a side not.. He was a year removed from playing for the the same AAU team (Oak Hill) as Melo.
Out of all the players we're talking about using our mid-level exception on, he's probably the most talented.

Still rooting for Porzingis to start at the 4 though.

Seems to me if its a move people don't like its automatically Melo's fault. If its a move people agree with then its in spite of Melo. Weird how that works no matter the circumstance.

JR is awesome too I guess.

JR adds tons of 3s and is a good filler player in weekly leagues. He can kill you on any single game leagues. If his 3 isn't going, it probably means he's disinterested and doesn't do anything else.

Josh Smith, Corey Brewer, and Trevor Ariza are stat stuffers even when their shots aren't going. Unfortunately, last year they all ended up in Houston.

Josh has the physical traits and skills to play an Odom-like role. He can rebound like a pf, block shots, facilitate the offense, score a bit from anywhere. Might be a pain in the neck to coach being a 10 year or so player.

538.com (Nate Silver's website) projects that Afflalo's 16 mil contract is overpaying him by 15 mil even in this new economy. I don't think it's quite that bad but I hate that we used half our cap space on Williams and Afflalo. It ruined what was otherwise a good off-season.

Josh Smith could be one of the best defensive players in the NBA. Very few guys can legitimately defend both wings and big men. His raw athleticism is off the charts.

There's what a player wants to be, what he could be and what he will be.

If Smith could humble himself enough to understand he will never be the player he wants to be ( A top 5 franchise core and scoring maven who can consistently create his own shot at will) he could actually embrace what he does do very well.

But sometimes you just can't fix stupid.

That is a great signing for them. Keeping DJ and adding Smith off the bench should help them. The west is going to be really tough.

They will be really good. Getting Smith and keeping him off the Rockets for a vet minimum salary was a great move in my opinion. I also forgot they added Lance. I think Lance does well with Doc and I also would expect that there would be a hierarchy in that locker room that would help a guy like Lance.
