It would. We already have 5 guards for next season, if we sign Jenkins then the likelyness of Shved coming back is unlikely.

It seems to be quiet on the Shved front. Only Berman has mentioned him recently. I searched him on twitter and saw that he recently got married. No other news that I am aware of.

If they don't resign Shved (or at least make an offer), you have to assume that was the plan the moment they traded for him. He played as well as you could have hoped in his audition with us last season.

I wouldn't doubt if the offer of our 2.8 million room has already been offered to Shved but he supposedly has interest from at least a couple other teams so it could be we're in a waiting process right now on Shved. Unless Jenkins is also being considered for the room exemption but don't think he'd get that much from a team.

Sounds like they were floating the 2.8 around Jason Smith until just recently. Not to hijack the thread here, but not very impressed by John Jenkins. Would much rather bring back our own guards and keep some slight semblance of continuity, regardless of how limited it is.

What happened to all the "we can exceed the cap to resign Shved" stuff? Any truth to that and if so, why haven't we done so? I know I read that at least twice, one time recently in a Marc Berman article. Now I see we may (or may not) have offered him the room exception of $2.8mm. Well that's not exactly what I would call exceeding the cap to bring back a player, and in this case one who performed very well for us after acquiring him..The guy had a QO of about $4mm which the Knicks declined but I thought the plan was to exceed the cap to bring him back at a decent number...

I believe we might be right at the cap now -- so by offering the room exception, maybe that's what they meant by "exceeding the cap" in regards to bringing back Shved. Is that the deal? OK but was Shved on board with that all along? If not, we probably should've made him a little more of a priority, no? I really wanted this guy back, man. A skilled 6'6" guard who can really do some good things including run the point and facilitate the offense. And he handled playing in NY VERY WELL which not every player can do. I thought Phil wanted this guy back too.. Strange...Just because we got Jerian Grant, that doesn't make Shved expendable, not in my eyes. I thought we really needed Shved back too for backcourt depth and balance. As is, if something ever happened to Grant (solid pick but the kid is only a rookie) for a period of time or Calderon (who's on the decline to begin with), we're razor thin at the point. Galloway's a decent 3rd guard to have around I guess (I don't love him nearly as much as everyone around here does) but he's no PG.. Here's hoping we can still bring Shved back somehow.

I think we renounced any bird rights we would have had in order to clear the 4+M cap hold.

Would you rather have Shved (room exemption) or take the chances on 6"6' Point/SG Daniel Hackett??

There are advantages for staying below the salary cap, like being able to put claims on players on the Waivers or AMNESTIED players, which will likely happen any time from a couple weeks to the start of training camp

Especially for someone like Christian Wood that could be available
We could bring in some guys to training camp and NOT sign them till closer to the start of the season, while still paying them for training camp invites as a loophole to stay on the time

We could use the room exemption on 2 players with 0 years of experience to sign 3year deals like for Thanasis/Daniel Hackket
Depending on how we structure the deals of Lopez, Affalo, Derrick Williams, we could pay them less this year but more next year with raises, for more cap space to use this year vs next year

Not sure if we offering John Jenkins a vet min deal or our room exemption

Along with AB and Shved for room exemption, if there is interest or not

It seems like we have interest in every player whether through FA or the draft, or agents are just using us for leverage like in the past and Phil Jackson is trying to build better relationship with players and their agents

Thanks for responding, Ron, and for providing some insight on our options. Matt as well.. I really want Shved back guys. Unless we have a big guard lined up who has similar skills (Hackett? Would've liked to have seen him for myself in SL. Hopefully he'll be a TC invitee and they get him some floor time with the ball in his hands) or our eyes on a legit younger PG somewhere, we really needed to bring this guy back. You wanna tell me O'Quinn was a priority after losing out on all the top bigs in FA, OK--good pickup, looks like good quality and value but now I'm thinking some of that Derrick Williams money should've been allocated for Shved. I actually think Derrick Williams is talented and still has upside, no problem with that pickup at all, but that was when I thought we had Shved in the fold. John Jenkins looks like a quality shooter but I think I prefer Shved's overall versatility over Jenkin's jump shooting.

We can always offer the 2.8 to JR Smith since he's not getting any attention from anyone else.....LOL.
