Don't blame Boozer for taking the money. Blame Paxson for putting him in a position where had to make a choice. The Cavilers where trying to save a buck and it cost them.

how was that? they were offering him the most they could offer.....

the only reason they tore up his rookie deal was so that they could sign him at a discount 1 year earlier before his contract expired & they would then have had to sign him to a much more lucrative deal in all likelihood...they tried to get cute, & it backfired on them bigtime...who's fault is that?
After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

If you read the article the boozers wanted the deal now!! cleveland informed him that next year they could give him more? how is that cute? I do a lot of business on handshake deals, and believe me I haven't been screwd but 1 time and so far the person can't do business in my area again, it is about trust, I made a hell of a living by dealing fairly with people and vice versa.... Boozer dealt unfairly, that sorry bastard....

Look...neither side is clean...but are we overlooking the fact that the Cavaliers wanted Boozer to agree to be a Cavalier before the CBA allowed him to?

neither side is fully clean here...

Just as point of reference, here's some excerpts from the July 1st article when Boozer option wasn't picked up. This was also linked in a previous thread.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1833065

Boozer:

"I want to be in Cleveland," Boozer said Thursday. "I like it here. My wife and I are very, very happy here, and I want to be with the Cavaliers. Good things are happening. Now it's up to my agent and the Cavs to work things out. "I hope they will."

Agent Rob Pelinka:

"Carlos and his wife, C.C., made it clear to me that they are very comfortable with the Cavaliers' organization, owner Gordon Gund and the direction the team is going," Pelinka said. "I'm confident that Jim and I will continue to have conversations and we'll be able to work something out."

Paxon:

"Yesterday, the Cavaliers elected not to exercise our team option for Carlos Boozer's third season," Paxson said in a statement. "As a result, we now are able, and fully intend, to enter into a long-term contract with Carlos.

" ... Carlos Boozer is a valuable, core part of the foundation of this team moving forward and our desire is for him to be a Cavalier for the long-term."

Boozer again:

"I'm thankful for everything the Cavs have done for me," Boozer said. "A lot of teams didn't think I was worth it and let me slide into the second round. But they were the ones who gave me a chance and let me play as a rookie.

Sure sounds like he was planning to stay.

Exactly...planning to stay is not agreeing to stay.

I agree with you that there was no formal, binding agreement in place. What Boozer and his agent did was not illegal, only immoral. They duped the Cavs GM and owner, and were rewarded quite well for their deception. It's not like they had to let him out of his min deal.

The huge mistake was letting him out of his deal in the first place. Whether they were trying to lock him up at a below market deal, or were just trying to show some loyalty, is irrelevent. It should never have happened. The Cavs have themselves to blame for not analyzing the market and realize an offer like this would be coming. Or perhaps they did, but expected Boozer to uphold his end of the deal.

Either way, it's bad for the league, damages the level of trust between players and management.

The way I look at is almost exactly the same....I think that Cleveland assumed he would stay, now if Boozer or his agent misled them....we will never know...all I do know is they made a horrible basketball decision at the same time as trying to make a wise financial decision (like you said whether they were helping Boozer or themselves with that extension really doesn't matter, trying to lock him up sooner was smart, regardless)
