Amundson and Thomas will probably be back. They know the system, are willing to on the bench and play hard when called upon.

Have to wonder if Bargs would suck up his pride and take a vet's minimum if Phil wants him him back.

EnySpree: Can we agree to agree not to mention Phil Jackson and triangle for the rest of our lives?

I think he can accept and do well in a limited role, whereas Bargs cannot - he only does well when he's made the #1 option.

Also - Why would anyone think Jason Smith was getting $15M-16M??? Come on guys!

why do you think that Jason Smith will/can do well in a limited role?

He has before in New Orleans and he had stretches in NY where he did well - especially toward the end of the season. He was terrible in the beginning of the season, but got a little better as it went on. Apparently he was coming off injury and also his wife was having some sort of difficult pregnancy - he played better after that.

I'd prefer to bring back Lou Amundson before him, but our front court is has two guys with question marks of varying degrees in Porzingis and Williams - I think it'd be good to have them both. From all accounts both Smith and Amundson were positive lockerroom guys, too.

It's difficult to judge him by last year, the team was very bad and he isn't a player that can make a difference on a bad team. He could be a good role player on this team providing scoring off of the bench. I think they wanted to go small with the second unit and push the ball, but nobody on the second unit distinguished themselves. It doesn't really matter though, someone is going to offer him a little more then we have to give him. I think he's a goner.

BTW sorry about the thread title. I should have re-read the Begley tweet and made some sense of it before posting instead of going into cardiac arrest

for some reason phil likes him because of how well he shoots that stupid long mid range shot.

Looked at his shot chart as well. There is not one single shot he can make above a 50% rate than the left elbow.

the fact that phil likes this guy and approves of his shot selection is to me the most alarming.

the knicks led the league be a wide margin in shots taken between 16 and 23 feet. If they lead the league in that category again, eeeeeeesh

I think Phil is not using any of the analytics. It was probably just a coincidence that Lopez has nice advanced stats.

it does seem that way.

If everything else about Lopez was the same but he also was a high volume, low percentage mid range shooter, Phil probably would have offered him the max.

so do you really believe that Phil is ignoring advanced stats? I don't think that is even possible.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

I don't know. I'm not sure if he's ignoring them, rejecting them, or giving them a little attention but then doing what his gut tells him anyway. Or perhaps he's actually using more advanced stats that we're not aware of but that would shock me.
Also, you can find plenty of instances online where Phil mocks the advanced stats.

He will seem like a more valuable player if he is a 15MPG player.

I think I like him more than some of you, but he was put in a more prominent role last year- not one he should be in IMO.

I'm a fan for sure. I'm actually a fan of pretty much every player we had last year as bench players. We might of only won 17 games but those guys played hard for us and none of them are true starters in the NBA even though they were playing starter minutes. The guys i really would want back are:
Shved
J.Smith
Bargs
Amundson
C.Aldrich
L.Thomas
I wouldn't minding if we filled out our roster from players off this list with Shved, J.Smith and Bargs on top of the list.

Big NO to Smith. He is a horrendous defender. I'm OK with Thomas and Amundson as bench filler role players because they are adequate defenders and function pretty well within the triangle.

I also emphatically disapprove of bringing back Bargnani at any price.

Why bring back anyone from that team last year besides Melo and Galloway?

I say no to Smith. We have Zing and added O'Quinn. I would bring back Thomas and Amundson and call it a day. We still need to add a SG.
Trust the Process

Yeah. Phil did say that he wanted to bring some players back from this last season if possible. It only makes sense. Just because you have a losing season doesn't mean that every player was of no use to the team. Phil used FA to build up the top of the rotation and that allows some of our role players to fall back into more comfortable lesser roles.

Bull****. They won 17 games. You want to "continue" that nonsense into this year?

Just cuz a team loses doesn't mean that NONE of the players are worth bringing back. You have to be more open minded and practical about building a team. Take the passion out of the equation and just make smart decisions. Some of the role players actually proved they can be useful.
