Next yr, Phil will probably try to make more than one trade to improve the team. If affalo, Derrick williams plays well , Phil can use them in some sought of package to get a bonafide impact player.. They will be entering last yr of thier contract..

Plus everyone will have cap space, making it very difficult indeed.

Yeah, if we're a lottery team without our own lottery pick, it won't be easy to attract FAs. The team has to make the playoffs.

And not as a 38 win team sneaking into the 8th seed. A minimum expectation of attracting good free agents would be the 6th seed.

Good luck with that!

Honestly this whole season and next season is the toughest time of this rebuild due to the lack of pick, on top of every team having cap space next offseason, plus the increasing cap inflating salaries this current offseason (which took all restricted FAs off the table). However after next year we are back in the driving seat because we will have our first round picks.

Next years FA sort of sucks outside of Durant. You either got guys on the wrong side of 30 or guys with injury concerns, RFA's that teams are going to re-sign because they know they have more money coming in next year, and Mike Conley...... Arguably next year will be like this year. Filling in Gaps.... then in 2017 the knicks could be a team that gets a great player because

1. Teams will have to start being responsible again with RFA again cause the cap isn't going up any more. A perfect example of that would be Giannis on the bucks. If they give him a massive contract will they be willing to be maxed out to keep Jabari and re-sign Monroe the year after? Teams will be a lot more likely to blink on deals in 2017.

2. By then the knicks should have a complete team and identity and can make a pitch to a team to come to NY.

Lopez, KP, Melo, Affalo, Grant is our early look projected starting lineup the season after next. With H.gomez, Williams or Thanasis, Early or Thanasis, Galloway, Calderon off the bench.

We would need to look at a long term replacement for Affalo most likely. Everything else has to be determined by the progress and contributions of KP, Williams, Thanasis, Early & Galloway.

There are also players that break out during the year that nobody is talking about at the moment.

We have to look at this as a brick by brick year by year approach.

Gerald Henderson would be a good pick up, he has really started to put it together last yr. We can see how he does in Portland. Plays defense, can hit the 3 now, as well as create. Oj Mayo would be a solid fit as well. Trevor Booker, Illyasova as well.

In 2017 the cap is projected to go to $109M. But there's also supposed to be a lockout.

Hopefully Knicks can use cap space for trades next summer if they strike out in FA again.

I think Durant is a total pipe dream and makes no sense with Melo here.

Bright side - if we are ready to part ways with Melo by next season almost every team in the league will have cap space.

I sort of wonder if the Clippers might eventually take a shot at adding Melo.

Clippers are kinda ****ed until next off season. They got no room to add players and are desperate for C and bigs. And a bench outside of Crawford. Who could they trade to the Knicks?
