I wouldn't mind Lin back on the team at a bargain price, but there are probably better choices. Depends on needs. With a bunch of young players on the roster, I'd rather not overstuff ourselves with guards, though do we really feel good about Grant/Galloway/Calderon/Shved as our 4 man rotation?... with Ledo potentially spending time at SG?
If anything we really need 2 or 3 of these guys to step up and truly demand and deserve 32mpg+ of floor time, and then we'll have a solid backcourt. Until then, we'll be in flux. Hoping Grant is one of those NBA-ready players who earns a starting job from the get-go. Wouldn't mind him starting alongside Calderon or Gallo. Shved showed a lot last year as the starting PG. But the Knicks still have a team option on him but will likely decline the option and try to sign him for league min. Not sure of Ledo's contract status, but I thought he had some sort of partial guaranteed team option for 15/16.
Regarding Lin:
Pros:
* Ivy league brain would be able to pick up the triangle offense quickly
* might be the best penetrator vs anyone on Knicks roster
* if you give him the reins of the team, he makes mediocre teammates better
* might be best as instant offense/owning the keys of the team as a 6th man type
The downsides:
* only moderate success since leaving the Knicks - not worth the "ridiculous" salary
* average outside shooter
* average defender
* Somewhat brittle - so he can't pull a Dellavedova and toss himself on the floor on D.
* questionable chemistry with Carmelo. (but come on, I get the impression that Carmelo's just a negative Nancy. Look at who his faves have been - JR, Tim Jr - so unless you're a junior, you're in Carmelo's doghouse)
* Lin has proven to be his best when he's running the team - not really an ideal fit unless he's given the coach's ownership of 30mpg+... (let's be fair, Houston had Harden... and Byron Scott's restrictive vision of the PG's role has gotten himself run out of town by Kidd and CP3 - both having career years after he left)
