IMHO, the Warriors win was an indication of where Adam Silver wants to take the NBA versus what David Stern would do.
During the "Heatles" offseason, LBJ, Wade and Bosh made a bunch of old guard white billionaires get on their knees and beg. And LBJ with The Decision was like a spit in the face. It wasn't just a PR disaster, it was like a declaration of war about what true leverage means in the NBA.
Every last sticking point since then in the labor fight has been about making sure none of that would ever happen again to the owners.
The "NFL model" is what's in vogue, the idea of fast rebuilds, more parity, and letting true competition drive profits. The Knicks sadly are stuck with an "old guard" concept, which is trying to build around a star who wants to stranglehold the franchise.
Silver has thrown the gauntlet - If you play the game the right way, you now finally have a chance. The marketing might still swing towards the jackhole who sells the most shoes, but it's no longer about Stern's dogmatic adherence to the "narrative" concept.
The Knicks just need to focus on playing the game the right way. Do that, and everything else will take care of itself. That is what the Warriors really did. I don't see it as "fashion", I see it as essential to building a true team instead of what the Knicks have tried, just arming up with mercenaries.
This is a good post - but Steph Curry wasn't some fake MVP. No one in the history of the game has utilized the three point shot like he has. He's made like 270 3s for the past three seasons in a row at 44% shooting. No one has ever shot the ball at that volume at that percentage. Before these past three seasons for Steph only Ray Allen had one season remotely like it - I think he made 240 3s at 43% or something.
But overall I agree that the last CBA tried to limit Free Agents moving around too much to form super teams and tried to help teams that build through the draft. I like what Silver is doing - it's healthier for the league.
