On the plus minus side, I get this makes signing Monroe more likely.

Key to playing the space and pace game is having an athletic center who can guard the middle. One reason I still like Stein. You need a center who can defend the pick and roll in today's NBA.

Actually Monroe makes a lot of sense for the knicks and if he is the future I'm not mad. He might be the best second scorer the knicks could put next to Melo besides M. Gasol and LMA. Monroe operates at different spots on the court from Melo, and the threat of his offense keeps opposing centers glued to him and keeps them from Doubling Melo. The same goes for Melo helping Monroe. Melo will draw PF's away from the paint and give Monroe better spacing to post up. Plus they are both good enough passers to create a two man game or pass to shooters on the perimeter. Defensively you got to hope they both can hold their own on a man defense level and more importantly grab rebounds. Surround them with some D&3 players (possibly Winslow, Galloway, Carroll, of Danny Green) and a switch in offense on the bench who can create his own shot when the defense forces them to iso (Shved) and you got a good space and pace half court team.

So you have no issue with Melo at the 4 and Monroe at the 5 on defense?

The Garden might as well put down a red carpet down the center of the key for all the opposing players to take directly to the hole.

I think you got to try and pull a dellavadova (IE scrappy bench defensive players) when it comes to bench PF and C this year. You find guys who can come in for a few minutes and not interrupt the flow of the offense and provide defense when Melo and/or Monroe sits in the frontcourt. A few minutes of great defense to try to make a dent in the other teams offense while the knicks offense keeps going is all we can expect this year.

Fill the rest of the roster with perimeter defenders who can lead their man left if he likes to go right or right if he likes to go left. Both Monroe and Melo have quick hands and so you try to put playmakers in the position where they have to pass or take a shot they don't want to take and go for the rebound or steals. In 2016 the knicks can get some bigs who can sub in for a decent minutes for Melo and Monroe with that 20 mil salary bump. Trevor Booker or Terrence Jones come to mind. Both are power forward who can defend perimeter players and traditional bigs and offers a little bit of everything on the offensive end.

to me this solidifies that monroe isnt going back
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

The Hornets have been one of the better defensive teams in the league with Al Jefferson manning the middle. So why can't we be the same with Monroe?

Bucks supposedly going to target Brook Lopez and Tyson Chandler in FA.

(I wonder if this opens the door to offer Middleton a max and see if they blink - they only have $22M in cap space)

If Tyson signs they can go over to keep Middleton with Bird rights and be out of the tax the very next year because the cap will go up. In fact its to their benefit if a team tries to steal Middleton and he signs an offer because that would be a 4 year contract instead of the 5 year contract that only the bucks can offer him.

how can you make trades this time of year? And how is that fair to the two teams who are still playing?

Thats the point. Its not fair, its so bad teams can try to get better first.

The league frowns on it, but it is allowed, technically.

You can make trades immediately after your season ends. Generally speaking, teams wait to give as much coverage as possible to the playoffs but it can be done.

This was an excellent trade for both teams

Detroit knows it needs a stretch 4 with drumm on the court, the bucks are pretty young, and are in need of some vets in the locker room. Parker can play the 3 or 4 and he's going to be really good.

Stan is going to help build that team similar to what he had in orlando, put a bunch of 3 point shooters around drumm (especially a 4..think rashard lewis, and turk).
