Whenever I here championships being mentioned, I think of Bill Russell.

Some "young'uns" either don't know the history of the game, or conveniently refuse to think about anything earlier than their own existence.

Bill Russell holds the record for the most NBA championships won with 11 titles during his 13-year playing career.

Russell is one of only seven players in history to achieve basketball's "Triple Crown" - winning an NCAA Championship, an NBA Championship, and an Olympic Gold Medal

He also was player coach on a championship team.

Russell led USF to NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956, including a string of 55 consecutive victories.

Russell helped the national team win the gold medal in Melbourne, defeating the Soviet Union 89–55 in the final game. The United States dominated the tournament, winning by an average of 53.5 points per game.

Bill Russell was an aesthetic player graceful cat-like on the defensive end maybe had the best timing in nba history. Not a great offensive player but payed a great team game.

Different era, and I know the game is played by two teams, but his success at every level is interesting, especially if you compare him to Wilt, his contemporary, and even the Big O.

In today's league Michael Jordan would have averaged 40 points a game.

Unfairly or not, this will always come down to rings. Until Lebron has <6 rings, people will say Jordan was better (even though you can't really compare players from different eras with any kind of accuracy). Actually even if Lebron matches the 6 rings people will point to Jordan never losing a Finals even though Jordan's finals teams were incredibly superior to Lebron's.

Even when Lebron was in his first year in Miami were either Wade and Bosh better than prime Pippen? People forget how good Pippen was. In many ways Lebron is more like a Neo Super Sized Future Pippen than Jordan aka a Forward who could facilitate and run the offense.

I don't think there is any question that rings aside, Jordan will always be the guy who answers the Jeopardy question "Who is the one player you want taking the last shot in a game 7". He was insanely, otherworldly, clutch. But I think Lebron has the edge when it comes to making his teammates better. He's a one man 260 odd lb wrecking ball who will beat you on offense while doubling as a preternatural point guard. It's absolutely insane some of the rosters Lebron has elevated.

But like i said, unfairly or not, until Lebron has more rings than Mike he won't take the mantle away in the public consciousness as the GOAT.
