If we had next year's pick, and really wanted to do a rebuild, maybe Phil would have fought with Dolan and done a sign and trade with Anthony (assuming this was possible-I'm not always up on the limitations placed on teams)and gotten another #1 and a younger player to develop. We would have had the worst record in the NBA this year, most likely, and would probably have a high lottery pick in 2016.
You are correct- as soon as you sign Anthony you are saying that the "rebuild" will be more rushed than you normally want it to be. Phil has talked about developing players for the long term, but it is hard to do this if you are building around an aging star. We do have a lot of cap space, though, which will obviously be helpful, but instead of looking at younger guys to develop, we might have to pick up players who can do more for us immediately.
I've been shot down in this forum for suggesting that Jackson will craft his team based on what Anthony can and cannot do on the court, but this has to be true to a certain extent, IMO.
Agreed. That's part of why I think Stein is the right pick. Draft Stein, sign Monroe and chase Khris Middleton REAL HARD. Milwaukee will have to decide if they want to build around Greek Freak and Jabari Parker on the wings or keep Middleton in the fold for say $12M starting salary.
Galloway
Middleton
Melo
Monroe
WCS
try to move out Timmy and Calderon and they'll have a around $15-$20M to spend in the summer of 2016 when the cap goes up again.
It's not my ideal or preferred way to rebuild, but it'd be a good team built around Melo.
The thing is that if they managed to actually put that starting lineup together that with a good bench would be enough to put this team in the mix for the playoffs IMO. The difference is having the defensive players who can make it possible for the team to be competitive as they also try to adjust to the Triangle and develop chemistry.
The key is to lock in WCS and Monroe and hopefully add a Middleton or Danny Green etc. The point being a wing who can guard, hit the 3 and slash to the basket. It would be a good start. Then you can have Shved as 6th man off the bench and some of our role players from this year. Add in Thanasis, Thomas and Amundson and you have a team with a lot more defensive presence than we had before.
