how much money do the pats save by...
a. not paying brady for the first 4 games (and still getting practice and preseason out of him)
b. not paying the 1st rounder next season and 4th rounder the season after

that 1 million fine really... thats gonna send a message?? that's chump change to an NFL team

this is nuts.. this is huge fine. One of the biggest ever, and losing a first round pick doesnt hurt? Do you follow the sport? I mean think of all the money the Giants would save by not having to pay Odell Beckham right?

Suspending a franchise player for 1/4 season, a huge fine and the loss of two picks, one being a first rounder is a very strong message indeed.

I think they got this one right. Its a minor infraction in my opinion, but its still cheating and they got caught. Its like corking a bat or doctoring a ball. Probably what got the penalty as stiff as it was was Brady's lack of cooperation. Pats are very scummy. They are going overpay for any of these transgressions.

Also, teams often donate the money to charity when a player is suspended without pay.

I agree. I especially like the forfeiture of the first round draft pick. Pats can't benefit from possibly getting a higher pick than usual next season

I think what makes this worse than doctoring a ball is that when you doctor a ball that is just you cheating. A scenario where MLB checks the balls or bats and then puts the " official" balls and bats in a room. Then you bully or pay someone to go into that room and switch the bats or doctor the balls before the game. In this case you are involving other people. 10 yrs ago if a Qb let some air out of a ball I really don't have that much of a problem with it but since the NFL changed the rules where the officials check the balls before the game and now you have " official" balls designated for the game locked in a room. Now there is a conspiracy to fix the balls with people that have access to the balls is so much worse. Then to deny and try to cover up emails and access to the individuals involved, just so wrong. I'm sure Mr. Mature Nalod will tell me that its no big deal and its part of life but sorry this is wrong. Instead of telling your kids to do the time if you do the crime, I tell my kids how bad it is do do the crime and don't do it.

fishmike 9/27/2024 11:00 PM Ug I hate this. The idea of Towns is great until you see what a pussy he is. Jules is a dog. DD was a flamethrower locked up cheap for 3 more years. First Leon move I hate

put it this way, does this stop the Pats from cheating ever again under Belichick? no.
Goodell should have fined them at least 5 million dollars.

How much lax is this current punishment going to get once the appeal is in?

There was also an article today about another quarterback noting that Brady had used pre-conditioned footballs years before QBs could do such a thing legally, in 2006. Up to that time both teams supposedly had to use the same batch of balls, and they were not tampered with.
http://www.nj.com/eagles/index.ssf/2015/05/former_eagles_qb_aj_feeley_says_he_witnessed_tom_b.html

Patriots always seem to be ahead of the curve.

You also have to look at this article about how their fumble rate decreased in the years following the decision to allow teams to provide their own footballs.

http://www.sharpfootballanalysis.com/blog/2015/the-new-england-patriots-mysteriously-became-fumble-proof-in-2007

I think you can conclude that they were probably playing around with ball deflation around this time. All teams were allowed to precondition their game balls, but according to this article:

...prior to 2007 the Patriots were RIGHT IN LINE with the league averages across the other non-dome teams. When you look team by team, they literally are in the middle of the pack for most seasons, as the histogram in the very first graphic at the top of this article shows. But starting in 2007, all similarities totally vanish.

The statistical “jump” the Patriots make in the 2006 offseason, from one fumble every 39 plays to one fumble every 76 plays is nothing short of remarkable. Their trendline over this period is not even close to that of the rest of the NFL.

Damning article- QB, RBs, and receivers all benefitted from Deflategate.
