1996-2003: 13-team Lottery
In October of 1995, the Board of Governors increased the number of teams participating in the Lottery from 11 to 13 to account for the addition of expansion teams Toronto and Vancouver. Starting in 1996, the team with the worst record in the Lottery continued to have a 25% chance (250 combinations) of winning the first pick, teams two (20%; 200 combinations) through six (6.4%; 64 combinations) have slightly fewer chances, team seven (4.4%; 44 combinations) has the same number of chances and teams eight (2.9%; 29 combinations) through 12 (0.6%; six combinations) have slightly more chances. The number of chances for team 13 (0.5%; five combinations) did not change. Tied teams split the number of chances and a blind draw determines which team receives an extra chance if the combined number of chances can not be split evenly.

I read that there was no coin flip, the teams simply share the odds- I've no idea which is true

It's actually relatively rare that two teams tie for the league's worst record -- the last time it happened was 2003. The worst team in the league is supposed to get 250 of 1,000 possible combinations of ping-pong balls in the NBA Draft lottery, giving them a 25 percent chance at the top pick. The second-worst team is supposed to get 199 combinations. If the two teams tie, the difference is split, with both teams getting 225. In 2003, this worked out fine for both teams -- the Cleveland Cavaliers got LeBron James, the Denver Nuggets got Carmelo Anthony.

I know. Last night was a freakin disaster. Problem is that teams aren't trying to win anymore. Except for the Knicks

No ties, or splits. 250+199 cannot be divided by two. A random drawing will determine who gets 1 extra chance.

We lost 25 ping pong balls tonight--I guess we can live with that. If we lose the last 2 we are locked in for a coin flip.

We will be picking 5th or 6th by the end of this. My Knick senses are tingling.

It might be a blessing if we pick 5th or 6th. I think the best nba prospect is going between the 4th and 7th pick. Plus at worst we get Stein and add Monroe for a twin tower back court. Both like to run and have lateral quickness to guard pick and rolls and the rim. It would be similar to Kentucky back court now so Stein would play his normal role.

But as a dark horse...I think Russell, Mudiay and Winslow will be the top picks in this draft...Just my gut feeling. Its always the guys that fly under the radar.

I don't buy into that. The Knicks didn't do all this to walk away with a serviceable player. They did this to change the franchise in a big way. I'm watching them piss it away a chance to get the next great player. I am so disappointed in Fisher and Phil right now you have a plan stick to the plan you are so close and to pull this stunt. It's like a big F you to the fans.

If your happy walking out of this draft with WCS is a great thing I sorely disagree with it. It's bad enough that the process is rigged. I too think that Miami will be allowed to jump into the top 3. Call it a gift for LeBron again. I do not believe in the system I want this to be done with cameras and live TV on the NBA Channel. No bull****. If they can rig a national election you know the NBA Lottery is rigged just see Cleveland.

I love how Berman goes from blasting us over the past few months for losing all these games saying we shouldn't be going for the highest pick, to blasting us for winning this game because it will worsen our lottery standings

Agree you win 16 games and somehow walk out with pick 5 is devastating. I'm not going to kill the Knicks for winning last night--but IF they are going to win Id rather see the guys play well--other than Cole who also ran out of steam fast--everyone was pretty much brutal. Vucevic looked like he had his head somewhere else and the rest of their guys were playing like they were at the YMCA. We did play some good D at times. Oh well what can u do. I hope we dont win 1 of the last 2 so we can atleast get the coin flip. If Minny gets the number 1 pick--we will all be upset.

I have no idea what our coaching staff is doing. When it was necessary to win, we couldn't nor even tried to do so; but now it is NECESSARY to lose to secure the top pick, fisher is trying his best to give that pick away.
Thank God Fisher is no longer our coach, now let's get Calderon out of here:)

If we tie Philadelphia, there is a 2% probability of picking 6th including coin flip odds. If we tie Minnesota there is a ~6.15 % shot of picking 5th including coin flip odds. Bottom line is lose the last 2 and get a minimum ~94% chance at the top 4. Correctly picking the best player there will be more challenging, especially at 2-4. I'd go with:

1. Towns
2. Russell
3. Okafor
4. Mudiay

Sh-t in the popcorn to go with sh-t on the court. Its a theme show like Medieval times.

Guys , I know it's tough but let's be real. The worst record does not mean the #1 pick. Moreover, the #1 pick does not mean the best player in the draft, even if you are picking the player who is #1 on the draft boards.

Yes the odds are better, but with such a large amount of other variables the is no reason to even be upset if we pick second. Or even 3rd. Now 5th or 6th would be a major fail, but even that has a chance to be a blessing in disquise.

Everything you have ever wanted is on the other side of fear- George Adair

Knicks lineup was Cole Aldrich, Jason Smith, Lou Amoundson, Langston Galloway, Hardaway Jr, Shane Larkin, Quincy Acy, Cleanthony Early.

There really isn't anything more that could be done. Can't knock players for trying to play for there careers. There is no reason why a team with Olapido, Harris, Vucajic should lose to that lineup other then the NBA being a joke.

I would take out Cole and put in Bargs.

I would play Galloway at center.

I would unleash Hardaway.

I think Bargs might be out for the season with a thumb ligament injury but I am not positive.

Fisher took out Lou and Cole down the stretch and played Acy and Smith. If im remembering correctly he inserted Smith for Defensive purposes on an out off bounds play.

The only flaws I saw was keeping Gallo in.

I would play Acy, Lou, Jason Smith, Lance Thomas, and Aldrich at point. Is it legal to play less than 5 players?
