Lets face it a big reason we have sucked for 15 years is because we constantly trade picks for crap. Finally we have a lottery pick and will get towns okafor or russell who are the biggest impact players. I doubt phil will try and do something stupid
Well, the last few times we kept our lottery picks (Frye, Sweetney, Gallo, Hill), it was mostly disappointing too.
i dont consider those guys true lottery players. We picked them between 6-10. This year we pick 1-3 and the top of the draft is really good
But is the top really good? Or is the 1-10 really good?
How many years have we grouped draft picks in the same selection...
(Towns / OK4 is 1a/1b - or vice versa)
(Russell / Mudiay is 3a/3b - or vice versa)
(Kaminsky / Stein)
(Winslow / Johnson)
To me this draft has more overlap of draft picks than any other times going into a draft. Usually the order of the top picks are well established by now. This is the reason why I think Phil doesn't mind entertaining a trade option. Some will have OK4 ranked high and Russell ranked low. But Phil could see them as both potential #1 picks. If thats the case, why not try and get Russell with another pick like Stein or Decker. It's like having the ability to get your target pick, with another 1st round selection, or potential NBA starter? Remember, we have more than 1 spot to fill, in our starting lineup. Plus, it's not how we rank these guys, it's how Phil ranks them....Similar to Reese from the Giants, Phil is running the show and he has his own ranking, which may be different from our ranking.
Towns, OK4 and Russell might have the same #1 value to Phil....Since we have so many holes to fill, this is the draft to take advantage of somebody below us willing to over pay for a chance to select #1-#4 slot. History tells us that all 4 players in the top of any draft will not turn out to be NBA starters. Maybe 3 out of 4. So I say, why not try and get your targeted pick, plus an additional pick / cap friendly player? Just because we finally got a high pick since Patrick Ewing, that doesn't mean we go into the candy store like crack heads, drooling over OK4 or Towns. Gotta be smart and explore all opportunities and select the best way to improve this team.
