alot can happen in between the 8th grade and college... being big at an early age can actually work to your detriment... i remember derick caracter was hyped as an 8th grader... so was telfair... felipe lopez who was slightly before that era and countless other high school stars that fizzle out in college...

most of these kids will look incredible on a highlight reel but don't measure up when the competition gets stiff and they dont really face national competition until they start hitting the all star games... that's where you really start seeing the talent separate itself...

the one and done rule saved a lot of teams from picking complete busts...

Keep in mind that he's playing against a bunch of 13yo. Let's see what he's got against real competition. It looks good when nobody is trying to defend you.

You make a good point with names HS legends you just rattled off. You can add Lenny Cooke to that list as well. The difference with those guys, especially Character and Felipe is that in HS they were either bigger than their comp or just older and more experienced. Felipe was damn near 20 in his senior year. Not th case with this kid. He looks superior athletically and skill wise.

yeah age is an enormous factor that most gm's just overlook... you see the same effect in college... as soon as you hit the nba you are going to be significantly younger than the competition for at least a good 5 years...

i was just looking thru the mcdonald's all star game mvp's and it's littered with twice as many disappointments as great pros... and by the time you hit the pros... i mean EVERYONE was pretty much highly regarded... i remember reading how raymond felton was a legend in high school and the best player the state has seen in years and he still holds a lot of its records... and this is RAYMOND FELTON....

to be a good nba player... it is an absolute gauntlet ...

I remember back in the 90's when Iverson was the second biggest HS star in his state after Ronald Curry. Remember him, the 2 sport star who was a bust in both sports!

Speaking of making in the NBA....There was a guy named Marion Cash who grew up around my way. He was the pg for Clemson back in the late 80's early 90's. In fact, he was the pg on the Clemson team that lost to Uconn in the tournament on that miracle last second shot by Tate George. Cash averaged about a modest 10 pts a game at Clemson over his career.

When he came home during the summers and played in various summer leagues in Harlem and in the Bronx, he would average close to 35 pts per....He was virtually unstoppable in any tournament he played in. Looked like Jordan of the playground. After watching him, I realized how difficult it really is to make it in the pros...
