his defense is really not good and is one of the worst shot blockers with his mini arms.

he is a very good rebounder which is about all that he is very good at.

If detroit lets him go and I assume that they will then we should not be the ones to do the stupid thing and max this guy out.

8-10 million per is all that I would offer.

youtube his highlights and come back to me. This guy is one of the best passers Ive seen in a long time. Look at his film a bit and I think you will agree. His passes to cutting guards are excellent. He could easily be a 4-5 assist guy in this offense.

His wingspan is 7-2... no alligator arms here.

No way $8-$10mm gets it done. I bet Pistons offer $12mm to start over 5 years and max raises. I think Knicks need to come in around $14-$15mm to make it happen.

When I say "not a good passer", I don't mean that he does not know how to, his passing numbers are just not good.

Can he pass in this system and average 4-5 assists? Maybe ... lets see if Phil thinks he can. I don't like assuming that a player can be a good passer if he was in a different system.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

I don't think that any bigs fit with our current guards. If we don't have a huge guard upgrade then Toronto will get a top pick.

thats probably fair value. I would think market value would be a bit higher. How would you feel about 4 years $60mm at $15mm/per at a flat rate?

That would set him up for a great payday at 29 if he blows up, and also gives the Knicks some flexibility by essentially front loading his contract now while hoping the cap blows up in a couple years.

OK4 is the only guy that would take my pursuit of Monroe off the table. They are simply too redundant and we have other needs.

Long way to the draft but right now it looks pretty simple:
1) OK4
2) Russel
tied: Towns, Stanley Johnson, Muiday, Porzingis (based on workouts, tourney, etc)

It would be great for Monroe but I don't think he has lived up to that kind of money. Thats what Brook Lopez got and he was a lot more productive at that stage. $11-13 is just right for a young big with room to grow. I'd give him the max only if we strike out on more high end talent. At least it won't be like settling on Amare. At least Monroe is durable

well thats the thing with signing someone elses FA. First and foremost your luring them with money. Our sell to Monroe is more money up front and a bigger role and he's set up for the huge payday if he explodes. If you are the Knicks you want someone who can grow into that salary at the worst. Can Monroe do that? I think he can. My downside is I overpay for a durable big who's a good scorer and excellent rebounder with good size. I dont see that as franchise crippling.

I agree. Some people are down on Monroe for whatever reason, saying he's a poor defender. He seems like at least an average defender. His offensive skills are perfect for this team, and he's a great rebounder. Obviously drafting Okafor makes him redundant, but any of the other major players doesn't. He would fit well with Towns. Also, either Russell or Mundiay would be a good fit of course. Signing Monroe to a max offer is a decent investment because he is young, and also extremely durable which i feel is a very underrated factor when discussing potential free agents. If you are going to make a big investment in a player, might as well get one who has a history of playing full seasons. He could be a breakout star here. Bigs tend to take more time to develop, he still has plenty of upside. Put someone rugged next to him who can defend and not crowd space, like Lavoy Allen, if we draft a guard. Then we are good to go.

+1. Very good point, not a lot of downside. Only downside is he remains what he is right now, a 15/10 center.

Wow didn't realize he was up to 15 & 10. Knicks really killed my interest for the NBA.

Thats a huge improvement from the 9 & 8 or whatever we saw last year. So he is already showing growth. He's shooting 49.4% that can improve but still very good. He is producing. Bad team and all.

With all that said depending on who we draft I'd give him the max $60mil if thats what it took

I would rather him at the 4. He's better there, but yea he can certainly play both.

The PERFECT storm is we draft OK4, sign Robin Lopez and Dragic and next year we start:
C Lopez
PF OK4
SF Melo
SG Dragic
PG Galloway

I think that could be a fun squad to get behind.... but assuming we dont have pick 1 than yea, I think Monroe at 4 years $60mm is a good spot to lock him into.

He's been the best player along with Drummond on a team that has played great basketball since releasing Josh Smith. Detroit may even make the playoffs (not saying a lot, but considering where they started the season.) It's also worth noting that Detroit will make a hard push for Draymond Green this summer. Probably offer him 12+ mil a year as he's a Michigan guy andd SVG doesn't like playing 2 traditional bigs. He will prefer to build around Drummond at the 5 and Green as a stretch-4 type, similar to what was successful in Orlando with Hedo and Lewis at the 3/4. Monroe is unrestricted so he will be easy pickings while Detroit has to wait out the offer sheet they likely extend to Green. Monroe is no doubt one of the most attainable big free agents out there.

I'd go

C Towns - higher ceiling than Lopez
PF Monroe - might be better 2way player than Ok4
SF Melo
SG Butler, Matthews, Green or Affalo - Phil like big guards who defend
PG Knight(but I don't see Phil going for a big name PG), Jackson, Beverly, Joseph or Lin

Remember we all agreed that in order for Melo to have deep playoff success we need to surround him with defenders. Not sure you can call Ok4 & Dragic good defenders

I was perhaps the very first to talk about Monroe as a Knicks. He is a hell of a rebounder and plays the game with intelligence; something we've missed for a very long time now. The addition of Monroe with Towns or Russell would please me tremendously
Thank God Fisher is no longer our coach, now let's get Calderon out of here:)

Yep- I think you can have one more mediocre to poor defender but not two- so either Tragic, Monroe OR OK4 but never two of them.

Good defenders available will be Patrick Beverley at PG and Khris Middleton at SG/SF, Roben Lopez & Asik at C. What's Milsap's defense like?
